Are you eating too much salt? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Did you know that eating high amounts of salty foods can increase your risk of developing multiple sclerosis, or MS? MS is an autoimmune disease that affects nearly 2.5 million people worldwide. A new study out of Yale School of Medicine found that a diet rich in salt can be dangerous when it comes to developing MS, especially if you’re already genetically prone. Too much salt can lead to inflammation throughout the body and on the brain. When the brain becomes inflamed over long periods of time, it can trigger an autoimmune response. This response can lead to MS. Contact your doctor if you have questions about your daily salt intake.
