Did you know how you use olive oil will determine the health benefits. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Olive oil, which is most known for the role it plays in the healthy Mediterranean Diet, is filled with anti-oxidants. These anti-oxidants help your body fight off oxidative stress, the kind that causes inflammation and leads to disease. But – did you know that heating the olive oil actually reduces its benefits? It’s best to use olive oil as part of a dressing or use it for dipping. You may have noticed that there are all types of olive oils at the store. Pick up the extra virgin olive oil which is the one with the most antioxidants. Studies have shown that consuming a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil per day can actually decrease your risk of dying from a stroke or heart attack.
