College kids can get run down with so much going on! Just imagine exams, homework, paper, etc.! SO much happening and combined that with the social aspect and sports activities  it can all start to feel like too much, and it can be really hard to handle for young adults. It’s important for them to remember they can't do everything. While they might want to go to class, work, play a sport, and participate in clubs and social activities, the reality is that sooner or later they’re going to get run down by trying to do so much and something will give. Remind your kiddos to focus on doing the things they truly love and forget about the rest, and reach out every once and a while with a positive thought or well wish to keep their minds positive and uplifted as they work hard!

With communal living and thousands of other students sharing classroom space, spreading colds and viruses is easy if you're not careful.  Germs are everywhere on a college campus and there is a saying that when one college kid gets ill—they all do. Although illness may be the last thing on your mind while you’re in stressful college classes, the flu can knock you down and make it hard to finish a semester strong! Good news for you is there is ONE important thing you can manage to do without too much thought! Wash your hands. Studies have shown that simple hand washing 3-4x a day can help prevent a large number of illnesses. So wash your hands, especially any time you'll be touching your nose, mouth or eyes or if you've been around others who are sick.

College students aren't exactly known for their early to bed early to rise attitudes, but getting sleep is an integral part of staying healthy. I’ve got three healthy tips for you to keep your sleep schedule in tip top shape!  First, Work out bedtimes with roommates. When sharing a room with someone it can be hard to go to bed when you need to and not get woken up when you don't want to. Try to work with your roomies to make sure you each get the sleep you need. Second, avoid all-nightersWhile you may feel like you need to study all night to do well you might be doing yourself a disservice. Not getting enough sleep can impair your ability to do well, regardless of how much you've studied, so make sure you get at least a little sleep before your big test. Lastly, create a bedtime routine. If you have trouble falling asleep at night you can help yourself by creating a routine that will let your mind and body know that bedtime is approaching and that it should get into sleep mode. After a few weeks of practice this should help you fall asleep when you need to.

Fitting exercise into a busy schedule isn't always the easiest thing to do, but taking control of your fitness routine will not only keep you fit (and make up for those late night burritos), but also keep you sane during those stressful midterms! To make exercise an important part of your day,  try  making  it fun. You're probably not going to work out if you are bored with your routine or find going to the gym torturous. Find a way to make it fun for yourself and you'll be much more likely to keep it up—better yet, take a friend so you are not only entertained but accountable for your daily trip. Also, try taking advantage of all of that open space most colleges are equipped with. Those large grassy quads or arboretums with trails you can walk on are perfect for you to get out and get active!

College can be the time in your life when you gain the most knowledge and insight for your future. It can also be the time you start to gain weight you’ll find hard to lose in your adulthood. Take time to focus on the things like monitoring for proper portion sizes, eating breakfast every single day, keeping healthy snacks on hand, and drinking alcohol and caffeine moderately. You should also drink significantly more water than you think you should, coping with stress in other ways besides eating, varying your meals to keep it interesting, not skipping meals, and take vitamins! Without careful attention to your diet, you could end up putting on the freshman 15 and more. Follow these tips to help keep your diet healthy and beneficial.

Do we need more sleep as the winter months roll on? Studies show that we

do! Doctors at Wisconsin state found that if you honor your circadian rhythm,

which responds to light and dark changes in your environment, you will find

yourself falling asleep earlier and waking earlier too. In the wintertime when the

sun sets around 6 p.m., use this as a reminder to wind down. Leave your work at

the office, keep the lights in your home dim and give into those feelings of

sleepiness. And most of all – don’t check your phone or computer. Just say no to

that blue light that affects sleep. Creating a sanctuary of calm in your bedroom

with cozy blankets and your favorite pillow will have you dreaming in no time.
