Did you know that moving to the country may help your child’s asthma and allergy problems? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. While it’s easy to think that farm living could increase allergies and asthma, research tells us differently. Living on a farm may be just what the doctor ordered. A University of Zurich study shows that sialic acid found in farm animals actually protects against inflammation of lung tissue. About 30% of children have some sort of allergy or asthma, but this does not include children who live on farms, who have little to no respiratory issues. Petting farm animals like cows or drinking milk straight from the diary, can give your body an extra layer of protection, so if you’re thinking of moving to the country – now you have a great excuse. The Staying Young Show

Show Title: “Mental Illness – Challenges and Triumphs with Special Guests Raymund King and Jason Bee”

Co-Hosts: Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson

Guest: Raymund King and Jason Bee in Studio

Segment 1

This entire episode is about raising awareness of mental illness and discussing the challenges and triumphs of those struggling with depression, anxiety, and bi-polar disorder.

  • Every year, about 42.5 million American adults (or 18.2 percent of the total adult population in the United States) suffer from some mental illness, enduring conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia according to new statistics
  • What role does our current busy lifestyle play in anxiety and depression
  • There are two main types of bipolar disorder (once known as manic depression): bipolar disorder I and bipolar disorder II. Symptoms include dramatic moods swings between euphoria and severe depression; patients may have hallucinations or delusions.
  • Patients with bipolar I have the most severe symptoms; bipolar II patients have more moderate symptoms.
  • Study researchers say health professionals should recognize a third and milder category --sub-threshold bipolar disorder.

THAT MUSIC MEANS IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

New research shows that the rise in Celiac disease is due to a virus that may go unnoticed. Researchers noticed that some areas of the world that have high genetic predisposition to celiac disease don’t develop the disease while other areas do. This lead the researchers to look at environmental causes or influences. You may be aware of the rotovirus (intestinal) or the norovirus (cold) but there is a seemingly symptomless one called the reovirus. Reovirus + gluten + genetic abnormalities = celiac disease according to research published in Popular Science. http://www.popsci.com/virus-triggers-celiac-disease

Does your job require too much sitting? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Long gone are the days of physical labor, at least for most of the workforce. Instead of fresh air and exercise, we are left sitting behind computers and breathing stale, recycled air. This change in lifestyle has led many down a path of declining health. New research shows that sitting too much can age rapidly. So, should you quite your job? Not if you want to have a roof over your head and food on your table. Instead, I suggest that you change your routine a bit. Find time to get outside and exercise. This may mean walking in the early morning hours or in the evening, or better yet, find a walking path and visit it every day for lunch. Walking outside is free and serves two purposes. So, don’t just think about it, commit to it. Did you know that bad breath can be from an underlying health issue? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. If you suffer from halitosis, the medical term for bad breath, you probably have an underlying health condition. The first stop should be your primary care physician who can determine if it is caused by sinus issues, gum disease, gastric reflux, or dental or gum disease. Once the cause is determined, a treatment plan can be started or a proper referral can be made to a specialist. Since most people with bad breath don’t know they have it, don’t be afraid to ask someone you trust. And if you have trouble dating or keeping a girlfriend or boyfriend, a check of the breath might be a good thing. Most people are afraid to embarrass their date, so they won’t say anything. You have the power to live a healthier future! Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Our website is loaded with valuable information on more than 100 different health topics. Are you increasing your risk for skin cancer? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Skin cancer is a serious concern, especially as we are hitting those sunny months of the year. We all know we should wear sunscreen, but most of us are too lazy to put it on, or we simply forget. In an effort to make it part of your daily routine, keep it out on your bathroom sink, right next to your toothbrush. Be sure to always cover your face, neck, and ears as well as other areas that will be exposed. If you gals have SPF in your makeup, be sure to check the strength, many times they put a low SPF, like 10, just for marketing purposes. I suggest that you use SPF 30 and chose a product free of perfumes and dyes. Remember, sun screen is for every day, not just the days at the beach or on the boat. Is there someone you are really mad at right now? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Being mad at someone temporarily is a natural, human emotion, but holding a grudge can cause you more harm than good. When we hold bad feelings towards other people it actually makes us age prematurely. Our bodies have surges of cortisol when we think negative thoughts and being angry doesn’t solve the problem. Being able to forgive is important for overall health. Let’s face it, when we’re mad, we tend to do things like eat junk food, watch television, and maybe even drink more alcohol. If you’re having trouble getting past your frustrations, take up exercise. Running, or better yet, kickboxing, will help you burn off the bad hormones and raise the good ones. When you feel good about yourself, you are more likely to feel good about others too. There's so much to know about living healthy... and that's why you can find all of our Medical Minutes and The Staying Young Radio Show at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Did you know that the smell and tastes of certain foods and drinks can affect your stress levels. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Who knew there were people like those at the Chicago’s Smell and Taste Foundation who are constantly looking out for your well being? Some of their research shows that sipping on hot apple cider can lower your stress levels by 76 percent in as little as five minutes. We all know that the stress of the day compounds, so I suggest that you skip that afternoon coffee and replace it with cider. Not only will you feel less stressed, you’ll probably sleep better at night too. The natural sugar from the apples will give you energy, but without the caffeine of your usual java. Because you can control your health and your future. Gardening is not only good exercise, it’s good for the soul and the brain. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. If you didn’t plant this year, put it on your list of things to do for next year. Gardening allows you to control your own food source, free of harmful chemicals and over-processed soil. The very act of gardening is good exercise and gives you exposure to clean air and the sun for vitamin D production. It has even been shown to be a major source of stress relief as it helps lower cortisol levels. Remember, high cortisol is associated with weight gain and chronic inflammation. Garden longer, live longer.
