THAT MUSIC MEANS IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

Living on a farm may just keep you healthy. A University of Zurich study shows that a sialic acid found in farm animals protects against inflammation of lung tissue. About 30% of children have some sort of allergy or asthma. This does not include children who live on farms, who have little to no problem with allergies and asthma. When we pet farm animals like cows or drink fresh milk from the diary, our bodies receive an extra layer of protection.

Need some tips on avoiding the flu? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Fall means its time to avoid the flu and colds. Nobody likes to be sick. Not only do you lose time off work, but you’re miserable for days. You can avoid getting sick with these few tips: First, get your flu shot and ask your doctor about the pneumonia vaccine as well. Second, get out in the fresh air. Germs harbor in places like air vents in the house and car. Third, take time to kick back and relax. Too much stress can cause the immune system to get weak and vulnerable. And lastly, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly. Things like shopping carts, door handles, and ATM keypads are full of germs, especially those types of germs that lead to seasonal illness. Take good care of yourself – I want you to be around for a long time. Ever feel like your meal is just one heart attack on a plate? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Today’s tip is about managing your meat intake. While I am not going to tell you to become a vegetarian, I will tell you that most Americans eat too much meat. Processed meats, like sausage can actually trigger inflammation and migraine headaches, especially if they are filled with preservatives. And, cooking out on the grill may not be so good for you either. Studies show that charring your meat or cooking it out on a grill may actually age you prematurely and lead to heart disease. When you do eat meat, chose lean cuts and try to keep your portion to 4 oz. Try to forgo meat at least one day a week. Now, if you suffer from gout or arthritis, consider limiting your meat to only one night a week. Visit STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM where you can pick up my book Stay Young 10 Proven Steps to Ultimate Health. Our website is loaded with valuable information on more than 100 different health topics. Are you showing your age? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. If you want to look young, start avoiding foods that will age your skin. Now we all love a little sweet desert some times, but did you know that a sweet tooth can also add years to your appearance. Sugar causes an inflammatory response which damages the skin’s collagen and ages it rapidly. Also, alcohol can make you look up to a decade older. Because alcohol is digested through the liver, the liver is over taxed and unable to keep up with all the toxins it needs to flush from the system. Those happy hours aren’t going to seem too happy when you have acne and wrinkles to show for it. And lastly, beauty sleep means seven and a half hours of uninterrupted sleep. Get started on a path to better health by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Our website is loaded with valuable information on more than 100 different health topics. What’s life like in your house? Do you have particular family habits? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. There are many benefits of having good family habits. We all know that our relationships at home are key to our happiness and to good health. There are a few things that healthy families do that you can adopt too. First, make family meals a priority. Eat at least one meal together each day. And as a long term goal, set a family mission statement. This will help each member of the family better understand who they are and what contributions they can make to strengthen the family bond. Another great way to keep everyone grounded is to do family history work. Understanding where you come from is a great way to shape your future path and feel connected to your roots. We all know inflammation is bad, but do you really know how to reduce it? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Reducing inflammation within your body will help ward off diseases like diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. Inflammation from a sprain or a broken bone is good because that’s your body’s natural ability to heal, but when inflammation becomes chronic, especially on a cellular level, disease can set in. If you want to help your body turn down the heat when it comes to the inflammatory process, you have to eat a diet that it will agree with. Avoid things like processed carbohydrates, sugary snacks and fried foods. Then put your body on the Mediterranean diet filled with fish, nuts, vegetables and olive oil. All this evidence and still smoking? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Over the years we have all been told about the health dangers of smoking, most commonly lung cancer and premature aging. As if you really need another reason to put down the packs, new research out of the FDA actually shows that smoking affects nearly every organ in the body. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States. Even if you have smoked for an extended amount of time, its never too late to quit. Finally, it looks as though the FDA is going to regulate nicotine levels in cigarettes to help make it easier to break the habit. Stop smoking today and encourage others to quit and remember, second hand smoke is dangerous too. Your body is a temple for your soul and you need to protect it.
