The power of touch has even more benefits according to a new study.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Are you in Sync with your spouse or significant other? Maybe you just need to hold hands more often or snuggle at night. A new study from the University of Colorado at Boulder shows that when lovers touch, their bodies actually synch up. Heart rates tend to mimic each other and they are as one. Much like how music can affect our vital signs, so can touch. If your spouse is stressed or in pain, touching them lovingly may be just what the doctor ordered.   If you ask me, you don’t need a special occasion to hold hands, give a hug or snuggle, make every day a Find all of our Medical Minutes and The Staying Young Radio Show at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Are you at risk for heart disease? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Every 25 seconds an American will have a coronary event and every minute someone will die from that event.  The best way to avoid having a heart attack is to understand your risks and make changes as necessary.  Most people know that if you smoke, have diabetes, or high blood pressure, you are at an increased risk.  But – did you know that your waist size can be a risk factor too?  For men, a waist size of 40” or greater and for women 35” or greater can put you at significant risk.  If your waist has crept up to these numbers over the years, it’s time to take action.  Change your diet and get moving.  The things you eat and the amount of exercise you get directly affect your waist size, and ultimately your overall health.  During this medical minute – another person has died from a heart attack. Don’t be a statistic. You have the power to live a healthier future! Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Ever felt like you were going to pass out in the heat? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. The summer months are upon us and that means summer heat. Unfortunately, this is a time when many people land in the emergency room, or worst die from the heat. Knowing the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion will help you stay safe. Also, keep in mind, the heat can get you even if you’re in the shade. When we’re hot, we sweat. That sweat can lead to dehydration very quickly. The usual rule of thumb for water intake is to take the number of your weight, cut that number in half and drink that many ounces. So someone 200 lbs needs 100 ounces. Here’s the key – you need another 8 oz for every 30 minutes you are in the heat. If you feel dizzy, have a headache, feel shaky or confused, the heat could be to blame. Don’t push yourself, get out of the heat and get hydrated. Did you know you can burn calories window shopping? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Window shopping may be somebody’s idea for burning calories, but it may not be their biggest bang for the buck. However, those that choose tennis or beach volleyball can burn up to 544 calories and hour. Just want to weed your garden? That’s good too the average calorie burn per hour for gardening is just over 300. Whatever you chose to do, the main point is to get moving and get outside while the weather is good. Turn off the tv and computer and live a little. I have it, your best and worst summer treats list. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Summer is a great time for soup – chilled soup that is like gazpacho or cucumber-dill. Kale salads are not only refreshing, the nutrients will boost your energy. Berries and melons are also a great summer treat. While noodle salad may be your favorite picnic snack, it won’t love you back and hits our worst list, along with fried chicken, and that favorite frozen coffee drink that is covered with whip. Even the fruit juices should stay out of your grocery cart. They may contain vitamins, but the sugar trade off makes them a net negative. Instead use berries to infuse your water or have sparkling water with a slice of lime. You have the power to live a healthier future! Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Our website is loaded with valuable information on more than 100 different health topics. Your body will thank you, for visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM.

When’s the last time you grilled out? Did you know you may be grilling up carcinogens? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. HCAs are cancer causing compounds that multiply when you cook protein on the grill. Not all types of protein come with the same warning. For example, grilled chicken is the worst offender with the highest level of HCAs. So if you’re going to grill chicken, chemists say to marinade it a mixture of olive oil, cider vinegar, garlic, mustard, lemon juice, and brown sugar. Not a marinade person? Grill your chicken with the skin on and then strip the skin before you eat it. And if you want a protein that has the lowest HCAs, try grilling salmon. Not only will it taste amazing, it will be healthier too.  You have the power to live a healthier future! Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Our website is loaded with valuable information on more than 100 different health topics. Your body will thank you, for visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM.

Did you know that colon cancer is the 3rd leading cause of cancer deaths among women and the second among men? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. The good news about colon cancer is that it is about 99% preventable. That news just got even better as a new study was released in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine showing that one of my favorite supplements, Resveratrol along with grape seed extract can help prevent colon cancer from even beginning. We all know that a good balance of gut bacteria is important to immunity and overall health, not to mention cancer prevention. As the study shows, Resveratrol and grapeseed extract help promote the diversity of that bacteria. They also help eliminate colon cancer stem cells. There's so much to know about living healthy... and that's why you can find all of our Medical Minutes and The Staying Young Radio Show at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM.
