Show Topic: Why Pets Improve Our Health

Co-Hosts:  Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson

Guest: Julie Steines

Segment 1

Intro

There is so much research showing the health benefits of owning a pet. Perhaps that is why therapy dogs have been so good for our veterans and others who has suffered through stress or loss. We have a special guest coming up, Julie Steines who is the author of the best-selling book Norbert’s Little Lessons for a BIG Life. I know you have seen Norbert lately – he’s that cute little therapy dog that has been all over the media lately.

  • Share our pet stories
  • Ways we have seen pets help patients
  • Why an iguana may not be your best bet!

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK-THAT MUSIC MEANS ITS TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

New research from Duke University shows that women are better at surviving crisis then men are. The researchers went back 250 years and analyzed mortality of those who lived through famine, disease and natural disaster. I don’t find this surprising because even in the blue zones, the areas where people live the longest, the women still outlive the men by an average of six months. Some scientists believe that estrogen may play a significant role due to its ability to boost and protect the immune system. I think it’s just innate – even in newborns that are born premature, the survival rate of females is higher than males.

How many times have you been under general anesthesia? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. New research out of the University of Queensland in Australia shows how anesthesia affects the brain. It used to be that we believed that common anesthetics, like propofol, simply mimicked a deep sleep. Now with the use of a technique known as single-molecule imaging microscopy, scientists can look deep within the individual cells to see how exposure to anesthesia affects their function. What they found is that the drugs not only disrupt synapsis, the action of neurons directing cells, these drugs actually inhibit presynaptic activity where the neurons communicate with each other. This is in line with the observation that patients with Alzheimer’s disease and young children with developing brains, often do not do well after exposure to a general anesthetic. This research will lead scientist to look for and discover safer alternatives. Every day there is something new in medicine and that’s why this medical minute is brought to you Executive Medicine of Texas, the leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Are you one of the 65-70% of pregnant women who reach for acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Acetaminophen has long been used by pregnant women for relief of pain or fever, but new research shows that this may not be such a great idea. One recent study showed a link between ADHD in children when the mother had taken acetaminophen for seven or more consecutive days. This was especially true if the mother took it before 18 weeks or after 32 weeks. Another study found a link between Tylenol use and future fertility of the offspring. Another study revealed that 10% mothers who took acetaminophen had children with language delays in early childhood.  Why is all this so tricky? At this point, acetaminophen is the only known fever reliever that had been proven relatively safe for pregnancy. A mother that suffers a high fever that is left untreated puts her unborn child in grave danger. There is so much to know about healthy living. That is why this Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by the leaders in preventative and proactive Medicine – Executive Medicine of Texas. Learn more at EMTexas.com or call 800-910-EXEC

Are Blueberries on your grocery list? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Blueberries have long been recognized as a superfood. This sweet little treat is nature’s way of filling the body with flavonoids – meaning they are full of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. Not only will they help you maintain good health and your youth, new research shows that they may become part of cancer treatment regimens. A new study from the School of Medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia found that mixing blueberries with radiation treatment had astounding results. When cancer cells were treated with radiation alone, the number of cancer cells decreased by 20%. When the treatment was combined with blueberry extract – cancer cells fell by 70%! There is so many great studies out there. And this Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you today by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Have you or someone you know suffered a heart attack? Survival may be a laughing matter. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  A study that was released at a past European Society of Cardiology annual meeting shows that heart patients are five times more likely to die if they develop depression or anxiety, while those who were not depressed had an eighty percent less likely risk of death. This is why staying positive through the process of recovery is so vital. If you have heart disease and signs of depression, like feelings of sadness, lack of energy, or the desire to sleep more than eight hours, talk to your doctor. Also, be sure to take natural anti-depressant measures, such as exercise and good nutrition.  A brisk walk each morning and evening, coupled with the reduction in sugar and processed carbohydrates has been proven to improve mood and health. Also, turn off the news and war movies and opt for comedies and good books instead. There is so much you can do improve your chances of surviving heart disease, so start today. How much sleep are you getting? Probably not enough. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. It’s recommended that you sleep for seven and a half to eight hours a night. That’s good, deep, uninterrupted sleep that so many are not getting. Scientists at the Washington State University Spokane took tiny groups of brain cells and watched them sleep and watched them wake up. They noticed that when the cells were induced to stay awake longer, they made up for it with rebound sleep. This further clarified that our bodies need sleep on a cellular level. Without it, the cells do not have time to rest and repair in preparation for the next day. Next time you are tempted to skip sleep, think about the affects it will have on your body. And if you’re trying to stay young and healthy for as long as possible, sleep must get the attention it needs. Researchers at NTU Singapore have created a skin patch that can convert potentially harmful white fat into energy-burning brown fat. The skin patch is made of hundreds of microneedles that contain one of two drugs: beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonist, which is currently used to treat overactive bladder, and T3 triiodothyronine, which is used to treat an underactive thyroid gland. Right now it’s only been used in mice where they saw a 30% reduction in weight gain and fat mass37.9% of adults in the United States are obese so this may be a huge breakthough.

Wouldn’t it be great if screening colonoscopies could be a thing of the past? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Listen up, because RMIT University may be my favorite new place. They just invented a small capsule that you swallow the same way you would swallow medicine. It measures the gases within the colon looking for disturbances of the gut microbiome as well as cancer. It just passed human trials, meaning that it’s safe and now its going into full research mode. If it passes (no pun intended) the clinical trials, it could revolutionize who we analyze the gut, perhaps doing away with screening colonoscopies and that dreaded cleanout process. One even more interesting finding from early studies – they proved that the inside of the colon actually contains oxygen which before physicians believed there was no free oxygen within the colon. And the more fiber in the diet, the more oxygen the gut holds. This may be why fiber has proven to prevent cancer and attribute to better overall gut health. There is so much to learn about healthy living and new research and that’s why Executive Medicine of Texas, a global leader in preventative medicine is bring you this Stay Young Medical Minute. Show Topic: Playing With Your Kids Increases Your Lifespan

Co-Hosts:  Judy Gaman, Mark Anderson, Walter Gaman

Guest: Ken Seiter

Segment 1

Intro

Discussion

Today is all about the importance of play, did you know that playing with your kids and grandkids will increase your lifespan – it’s true.

(Connect) Reminisce about the things our parents did with us (or not) and the things we have enjoyed doing with our own kids.

(Inspire)  challenge the people listening right now to plan some play time each week

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK

Study published in the open access journal BMC Medicine, looked at over 15,000 people and found that eating a diet high in fruits, veggies, nuts, and legumes, such as the Mediterranean can prevent the onset of depression. Basically, the study results show that depression is most likely linked to nutrient deficits, something that we have seen in our practice as well.

Intro

Coming up – we are going to our special guest Ken Seiter, a VP at the Toy Association and an expert on the importance of play.

ANDERSON - Immortal minute

“This Immortal Minute is brought to you by - Solis mammography – exceptional experience and exceptionally accurate results”

Today’s show is all about the importance of play and we are visiting with Ken Seiter who holds a Master’s degree in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota. He is the VP of Marketing Communications at the Toy Association where he oversees the development, implementation and oversight of the Association’s communications strategies, key messaging and brand integrity programs.

Discuss

  1. Tell us about the Genius of Play Movement
  2. The Toy Industry Association recently conducted a survey on how and when parents play with their kids. Tell us about the findings of that survey
  3. Research points to direct correlation between play and stress reduction – this is true for kids as well as adults. A group of researchers at the Kansas State University studied single mothers, who often experience higher levels of parental stress. According to their findings, the mothers who engaged daily in playful activities with their kids, such as reading stories or playing games, had lower levels of stress.
  4. Today’s highly scheduled children have less time for free play, and some react to the associated pressures with anxiety and increased stress. According to the clinical report “The Importance of Play in Promoting Healthy Child Development and Maintaining Strong Parent-Child Bonds” published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, depression and anxiety in kids appear to be linked to lack of unstructured playtime.
  5. Play has a proven therapeutic power. According to Dr. Cindy Dell Clark of Rutgers University, play – particularly pretend play - allows children to “act out” their feelings and dilemmas. Given enough time to engage in pretense, children playfully confront difficult meanings on their own terms.
  6. Play is fun and, similar to physical activity and sports, can trigger release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. In addition, the social interaction of playing with others can help ward off stress and depression. A study of over 800 public school students showed that the highest levels of happiness in children occurred when they were playing or conversing with friends.
  7. When stressful situations do arise, play helps people of all ages remain resilient through tough times. Developing a playful nature can help you loosen up, break the ice with strangers, make new friends, and form new business and personal relationships.

Segment 3

Intro

Upcoming Dementia Defender 844-WELL100

We are talking about the importance of play. Sure, play is important to our kids development, but it also will help you as an adult live longer

Discuss

  1. It’s important to your stress level and your happiness quotient that you have at least one activity that you do regularly just for fun. According to Dr. Stuart Brown, Founder of the National Institute of Play who has conducted over 6,000 play studies during his 40-year career, “Denying our need to play can have negative effect on our emotional well-being. The opposite of play is not work, its depression”.
  2. Play empowers people to be flexible thinkers, creative, young-at-heart and free-spirited. Successful companies like Google recognize this by integrating opportunities to take a break into their workspaces. Others, including Coca-Cola, Unilever, Toyota and even NASA, have used “Lego Serious Play” method, which utilizes building bricks to unlock employee’s problem-solving abilities and encourage out-of-the-box thinking.
  3. Play is also a great way for parents and other adult caregivers to strengthen the bond with the kids. In a survey of 500 US parents recently conducted by the Genius of Play, 93% said play helps them bond with their child.

Engaging our Kids to Play with us

  1. Play board games – a great way for kids to learn following the rules and compromising, while developing problem-solving and strategy skills.
  2. Engage in arts and crafts. These activities help young children develop fine motor skills, while fostering creativity and self-expression.

Coming up Medical Mania Trivia and then at the end of the show -  Dementia Defender Riddle of the day – your chance to win a free copy of the book Age to Perfection.

  2. How many pounds of bacteria are in the average human body at one time? (4 lbs.)
  3. During the average lifespan, how many barrels of blood does your heart pump? A. 15,000 B. 250,000 C. 1.5 Million (5 Million, enough to fill 200 train tank cars!)
  4. True of false. Your heart can beat when temporarily detached from the body (True – it has its own electrical impulse)
  5. At what age does your brain stop developing (Late 40s)
