Did you know there is a new treatment for HIV? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. There is around 36.7 million people around the world living with HIV or AIDS. Not all of them are old cases, nearly 2 million people are recently infected. Although, HIV does not carry the same risks as it did in the past. People today are living with HIV and current medication regiments keep HIV from turning into AIDS, a life threatening decline in the body’s immune system. One of the ongoing issues for people with HIV is their ability to stay compliant with taking a combination of drugs twice a day or more. Now, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Brigham and Women's Hospital have developed a single capsule that can slowly release a whole weeks-worth of antiretroviral medication. This is a great thing because, if we can keep compliance numbers high, we can keep people from developing AIDS. The capsule, which has currently only been tested on animals, slowly releases enough medication each day of the week. Medical advancements are happening each and every day. This is why this Stay Young Medical Minute is being brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas. Patients fly in from all over the globe for their preventative and proactive approaches to health. A Chinese study released in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention showed that women who work the night shift, or irregular hours are one fifth more likely to develop cancers, particularly skin, breast, and lung cancers. This is significant for US residents because according to the CDC as many as 15 million of our workers work the night shift. We already know from other studies that the night shift is linked to increased risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease because it significantly disrupts the body’s circadian rhythm, or internal clock. Now before you say that the research was only applied to Chinese people, you need to know that the research team looked at over  3.9 Million participants and more than 114,000 cancer cases. The patient demographic varied as participants were from Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. This just goes to show how important Good quality sleep is. The Staying Young Show

Show Topic: Postpartum Depression with special guest Kimberly Hershenson

Co-Hosts:  Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson

Guest: Kimberly Hershenson

Segment 1

Intro

Our focus today is postpartum depression. Even if you are not a woman of childbearing age, this topic may still affect you in some way, whether that be dealing with a wife, your grown children, or grandchildren. Even more surprising, postpartum depression can also strike men. We have a special guest later this hour Kimberly Hershenson a NYC based therapist whose practice revolves around this very topic.

  • Stats - Centers for Disease Control, 11 to 20% of women who give birth each year have postpartum depression symptoms. Take the average of 15% of four million live births in the US annually - approximately 600,000 women get PPD in the US each year
  • What has been your experience with PPD in your life or with patients?
  • Only 15% of women with postpartum depression ever receive professional treatment. This means about 850,000 women each year are not getting the help they need.
  • Do you think there is a stigma – either real or perceived around PPD?

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK

THAT MUSIC MEANS ITS TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

Love this one! I have always had an unbelievable sense for determining someone’s heath by looking at their face. I can tell you when a woman is pregnant, even as early as 8 weeks. I have also accurately predicted cancer, high blood pressure, and illness before the symptoms arrive. I am so glad to know that I am not crazy, as some people have suggested (not saying who). According to a published article in Frontiers in Psychology, selfies will soon be able to determine a number of health issues using the same technology that is based on the human brain. Turns out, many humans have a very developed facial recognition and facial change radar. It makes sense really that the status of health can be found in the face, after all if we want to look younger and healthier, we get a face lift! We are judged by our face all the time.

So, you’re a smoker who has quit. Did you know adding two things to your diet can help repair years of lung damage? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Smoking can damage your lungs and it can take years to repair that damage. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health found that adding fresh fruit and tomatoes to your diet may help stop the decline in lung function. The researchers looked at over 650 adults from three different European countries. They found that those who consumed two tomatoes and three servings of fruit per day had better outcomes over a ten year period. This is just another study showing the link between nutrition and overall body health. Even if you’re not a past smoker, the research showed that having these things in your diet helps with maintaining lung health as you age. So, put fresh fruit berries and tomatoes on your grocery list each week. There has been so much research on alcohol, but is it ok in moderation? Well, this new research may hold the answer. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Cancer Research UK released some incredible evidence that alcohol, in any amount, may harm your body on a cellular level. The research looked at mice who were given diluted alcohol and after the researchers performed a chromosome analysis and DNA and sequencing. What they found was remarkable. When you consume alcohol, your body produces a chemical called acetaldehyde (Aset-al-dehyde), which in turn damages the body on a cellular level and causes permanent changes to the DNA. These damaged cells can then become cancerous and multiply. This is probably why alcohol has been linked to seven different types of cancer in humans. Our advice is to stop alcohol intake altogether, because leading a long and healthy life is too important to miss out on. This Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a global leader in preventative and proactive health. Visit EMTexas.com or call 800-910-3932.

Discussion on journaling, exercise, taking up cooking classes to inspire better eating, etc.

Challenge to every listener to take charge of their health by getting outside of their comfort zone and routines and taking on new things.

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK

Love this one!  Love Love Love it. Listen up guys – A new study that just came out in the Journal of Family Psychology shows that men who help out with their fair share of housework have a better sex life. Interestingly enough, the study didn’t define fair share -that was defined and different for each couple. So my suggestion to you guys out there is to talk to your partner and get your honey do list completed each week. That way, everybody is happy!

It seems there is a patch for everything. What if I told you there may be an upcoming patch for weightloss? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. It’s true, researchers from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have developed a patch full of micro-needles that deliver a combination drug that changes dangerous white fat into energy burning brown fat. The study was completed on mice and researchers report the mice lost 30% of their fat mass within a month, despite eating a high fat diet. If this patch works for humans, it could mean a complete breakthrough in the obesity epidemic. Currently, over one third of Americans are obese and diabetes is at all-time records in both adults and children. Since this patch has not yet been studied in humans, we still strongly suggest the exercise and sensible eating is always your best bet for fat conversion. Isn’t it funny when a friend tells you something and then months or years later a study comes out to prove they were right? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. A friend of mine had dropped just over thirty pounds and I assumed she had made some drastic change, perhaps weightloss surgery. She told me how all she did was alter the time of day she ate, not necessarily her diet. She would only eat be between 10am and 4pm, fasting the rest of the time. I was shocked, but then a new research study was released from University of Alabama at Birmingham showing that people who only ate from 8am to 2pm had a higher metabolism and less cravings. While those aren’t the exact hours my friend was keeping with her eating plan, the number of eating and fasting hours remained the same. Looks like this may be something I might try. There’s so much great information on health and things you can do to live a longer and more active life. That’s why patients fly in to see the experts at Executive Medicine of Texas, a global leaders in age management. Visit EmTexas.com or call 800-910-3932 that’s EMTexas.com

Everyone wants a smart child, right? If they sleep through the night, it’s even better. There’s a small thing you can do to increase your child’s IQ and improve their sleep patterns by simply changing their diet. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. We have long known that eating fish once a week has significant health benefits, but new research shows that children can benefit too. A study out of the University of Pennsylvania found that kids who eat fish once a week not only sleep better, they also have an average of four points higher on their IQ. So, next time you’re planning the family meal, be sure to put fish on the menu. It’s loaded with omega 3 fatty acids. Remember, cold water fish, like salmon and tuna are best because they have the highest nutrient levels.
