When’s the last time you grilled out? Did you know you may be grilling up carcinogens? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. HCAs are cancer causing compounds that multiply when you cook protein on the grill. Not all types of protein come with the same warning. For example, grilled chicken is the worst offender with the highest level of HCAs. So if you’re going to grill chicken, chemists say to marinade it a mixture of olive oil, cider vinegar, garlic, mustard, lemon juice, and brown sugar. Not a marinade person? Grill your chicken with the skin on and then strip the skin before you eat it. And if you want a protein that has the lowest HCAs, try grilling salmon. Not only will it taste amazing, it will be healthier too.  You have the power to live a healthier future! Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Did you know that colon cancer is the 3rd leading cause of cancer deaths among women and the second among men? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. The good news about colon cancer is that it is about 99% preventable. That news just got even better as a new study was released in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine showing that one of my favorite supplements, Resveratrol along with grape seed extract can help prevent colon cancer from even beginning. We all know that a good balance of gut bacteria is important to immunity and overall health, not to mention cancer prevention. As the study shows, Resveratrol and grapeseed extract help promote the diversity of that bacteria. They also help eliminate colon cancer stem cells. There's so much to know about living healthy... and that's why you can find all of our Medical Minutes and The Staying Young Radio Show at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Did you know that olive oil may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. It’s true, extra virgin olive oil has been shown to prevent Alzheimer’s disease in an animal study that was published in the Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology. In the study, the research team genetically modified the rodents to have Alzheimer’s and then divided them into two groups. The rodents that were fed olive oil had healthier synapses between neurons. Those rodents also had less toxic debris between the brain cells. This is not surprising since the Mediterranean Diet, which includes olive oil has long been praised for its healing effects.  For more unique and useful health information on more than 100 different topics, visit STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM where you can also find my book, Aged to Perfection, How to Thrive to 100, Happy Healthy & Wise. Co-Hosts:  Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson

Segment 1:

It seems like everyone is angry these days, but anger can affect your health. If you’re ready to get rid of your anger or help someone with their anger, today’s show is for you. We have a fabulous guest that will be joining us soon, Dr. Bernard Golden, author of the book Overcoming Destructive Anger: Strategies that Work

  • The process of anger – you see or hear something that doesn’t agree with you. Your amygdala alerts your body to release adrenaline and even testosterone. Prefrontal cortex kicks in to make decisions on what to do
  • The time between initially getting angry and the response from the prefrontal cortex is less than two seconds. This is why holding a response is so important
  • Everyone has a trigger – what’s yours?

THAT MUSIC MEANS IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

Do you suffer from migraines? It could be due to coenzyme Q10 and riboflavin deficiencies. More and more teens and young adults are suffering from migraine headaches and a study out of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center found that this age group may have deficiencies in coQ10, riboflavin and vitamin D. If you or a loved one suffers from migraines – blood tests that check for vitamin deficiencies may be a great place to start.

Do you know the real cost of diabetes? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Did you know that over 8% of our population suffers from diabetes? It not only costs our country a small fortune in health expenses, it can cost the individual about 6 years off of their life. The price of diabetes is just too high!  We should all be working together to avoid getting the disease in the first place.  You can start by exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight, but remember, the scale doesn’t tell the whole story.  You don’t have to be obese to suffer from diabetes, so watch what you eat and avoid sugary snacks and packaged and processed foods.  Choose fresh fruits and vegetables and be sure to get plenty of lean protein.  Avoid pointless snacking and eat at structured times. Together we can save ourselves and our families from the devastation of diabetes, but we have to put in the effort.   For more unique and useful health information on more than 100 different topics, visit STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM where you can also find my book, Aged to Perfection, How to Thrive to 100, Happy Healthy & Wise. When’s the last time you laughed? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. There is a reason that serious people die young and often miserable.  Our bodies and brains need a break from all the stressors of life.  If you aren’t having any fun, chances are your health will suffer. According to one study out of Loma Linda University Medical Center of California, laughing has physiological benefits that include lowering blood pressure, reducing stress, and improving immunity.  If you find yourself too busy to have fun, then you are just fooling yourself.  Fun and laughter should be a part of your everyday life, not just saved up for special occasions.  Many a doctor, have written prescriptions for laughter or vacations when they see a patient getting too wrapped up in their job or the stressors of life.  Start analyzing your day. If you’re not laughing, its time to change things up.You have the power to live a healthier future! Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Do you know how much sleep you need? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Over the years, Americans have become sleep deprived. Back in the 1970s the average adult slept for 8.5 hours, but today we’re lucky to get 7 hours of sleep.  The average adult needs 7.5 to 8 hours of sleep per night.  So if you’re only sleeping 6 hours a night – that means you’re missing at least 45 hours of sleep per month and YES it does add up!  Unfortunately, our kids are suffering too.  Parents need to be sure their infants are sleeping about 16 hours and their teens at least 9 hours.  Sleep plays a very important role in development as well as continued good health.  Can’t sleep?  Well, start with a long walk, followed by a warm bath, and topped off with a cool dark room and a comfortable bed.  If you try all these things and still no luck – it’s time for a physical exam to make sure there isn’t an underlying medical condition. There's so much to know about living healthy... and that's why you can find all of our Medical Minutes and The Staying Young Radio Show at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Did you know you can grow your brain? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. It’s true, you can grow your brain and the easiest way to do it is through exercise. That jog around the block or those laps in the pool are not just good for the extremities, they help your brain too.  When we exercise, acetycholine is activated and our levels of neutrophins increase – causing brain cells to be made. A research study out of the University of Victoria found that people who take up walking three times a week see an increase in brain size in as little as three months.   This is also great news for those suffering from or at risk for dementia because a separate study found that 30 minutes of exercise, five times a week can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s by 35%. So get up and get moving – your brain will thank you.For more unique and useful health information on more than 100 different topics, visit STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM where you can also find my book, Aged to Perfection, How to Thrive to 100, Happy Healthy & Wise. What mistakes are you making now that will affect your health later? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Our lives change and so do our bodies. You see, as we age our possible health pitfalls change.  In our teenage years, we may not get the extra sleep our body needs to support a growing changing body. Then when we leave for college, things like drugs and alcohol may sneak in, sometimes becoming a lasting bad habit.  Around age 30 and 40 we start to become so wrapped up in our careers that we work too many hours and forget to take time to rest. Unfortunately, once we finally decide to slow down a bit around 50 we may have already become dependent on stimulants like excessive caffeine. The best way to avoid these “pitfalls by decade” is to understand them and make a conscious effort not to fall in. No matter what stage of life you are in, your mind and body will thank you for making good, healthy decisions, one day at a time. You have the power to live a healthier future! Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Our website is loaded with valuable information on more than 100 different health topics.
