New research out of Latin America suggests that anxiety is higher in women with larger waist to height ratios. They studied 5,580 women with a mean age of 49.7 years. 58 percent were postmenopausal, and 61.3 percent reported anxiety issues. This is a no brainer and I don’t think they actually needed a study. When you look at the age and consider menopause, of course the risk for anxiety goes up. Furthermore, smaller waist size usually indicates a more active lifestyle. We all know that exercise decreases anxiety. This study only confirms that we already know, hormone balance and exercise curb anxiety, as well as keep your body lean.

Do you cough after you eat? If so, it may be a sign. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Coughing after you eat may be related to several things. For example, some people cough if they eat a food they’re sensitive to or allergic to. Many people don’t realize that they have such sensitivities. Another common cause is acid-reflux, where the food and stomach acid actually travels back up the esophagus. And for those people who suffer from asthma, some foods contain sulfites, which can trigger an asthma attack. According to the American Cancer Society, 2018 could bring around 100,000 cases of colorectal cancer. Do you know how to protect yourself? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. While genetics play a role in these cancers, so does lifestyle. While you can’t control your genes, you can take control of your nutrition. First, cut back on red meat and opt for more vegetables and fruits. Also, foods high in fiber keep things moving through the colon so it can flush out. Probiotic rich foods like those found in yogurt and sauerkraut help keep your gut microbiome filled with good bacteria. Prebiotics, like asparagus also are great because they feed the good bacteria. Even if you eat all the right foods and live a healthy lifestyle, regular physical exams are still important. Be sure to report any changes in bowel habits or rectal bleeding. Many of them are helpful. Less than 1% of bacteria will actually make us sick. When they do make us sick, they are called "bacterial infections". Examples: salmonella, staph, or strep

As if we need another reason to preach to everyone about the dangers of artificial sweeteners!  A new study out of the Weizmann Institute of Science's Department of Immunology shows that artificial sweeteners actually manipulate our gut bacteria, attacking the important gut biome and causing diabetes and metabolic syndrome. The study showed a change in glucose tolerance after exposure to artificial sweeteners. Not only do these things make you sick, they also make you fat. If you can’t metabolize glucose properly, your entire metabolism is shot!

Are you a fidgeter? This is Judy Gaman and this is your stay young medical minute. When some people get nervous or impatient they fidget. Fidgeting is the act of small movements with the hands of feet as a way to release pent up energy. You’ve probably all seen these little fidget spinners, perhaps you own one. One thing you may not know is that these little spinners come with a health hazard to kids. The Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition is working to get the word out that fidget spinners have caused a number of deaths and injuries to small children. Often the strong magnets come loose and children choke. Also, the ones that light up contain small lithium batteries. Some children have swallowed these batteries and had significant health issues as a result, even after having these surgically removed. Bottom line, keep your fidget spinners at work and out of the hands of children. Vitamin D deficiency is a major health concern in our country, but checking only your vitamin D level may be a moot point. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  A review published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association may unveil the reason 50% of our population is low in Vitamin D. It turns out that vitamin D, without adequate magnesium may not do you any good. Doctors are regularly checking vitamin D and prescribing supplementation, but doing so without also checking magnesium could be a mistake.  The recommended daily allowance for magnesium is 420 mg for males and 320 mg for females. Unfortunately, the average daily consumption through diet in the US contains only about half of that. Lesson – Vitamin D and Magnesium supplements should be prescribed together as well as tested together. Sometimes the hair on our head gives clues to other health issues. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Ok guys, new research from the University of Bonn linked hair loss to other factors. The researchers looked at 20,000 men’s genetic code and found 63 alterations that were also linked to hair loss. For example, short men are more likely to go bald. Bald men are more likely to have prostate cancer. Men that went through puberty early are more likely to go bald. These are just a few of the findings, but interesting nonetheless. This research just emphasizes that what you see on the outside is often a reflection of what’s going on inside of the body. Remember that hair loss in both men and women is often associated with a change in hormone levels, so be sure to see your doctor if you start seeing more hair in your brush or on your pillow. New research on e-cigarettes is making the news.  University of California, San Francisco looked at the danger to teens. While e-cigarettes were meant to be a way to wean adults off regular cigarettes, it appears to be a gateway for teens that leads to smoking and drug use. They found that teens can also become addicted to e-cigarettes, but that is not the worst of it. They looked at 104 teens with an average age of just over 16 years. 67 were e-cigarette users, 17 used e-cigarettes as well as traditional cigarettes, and 20 did not smoke or vape and were used as the controls. Teenagers who vaped had a three times higher concentration of toxic compounds in their bodies. In the case of teenagers who used both tobacco cigarettes and e-cigarettes, the concentration of toxic chemicals in the body was an additional three times higher than those who only vaped. It seems to have a compounding affect. It also turns out that some of these flavors, though FDA approved in their natural state become carcinogenic when they’re heated.

Diabetes is on the rise with younger and younger cases of type two diabetes each year. This is such a debilitating disease, yet it’s so preventable. The first step is to know your numbers. Not just your fasting glucose, which gives and immediate reading of your current blood sugar, but you should have a yearly A1C, a test that gives an average blood sugar over the course of the last three months. If your A1C is in the pre-diabetic state, there is so much you can do to prevent your body from ever developing diabetes. First, increase your exercise to 3 to 4 times a week and include cardio. Next, avoid all processed and packaged foods as well as fried foods. You also need to increase your number of vegetables, eating many of them raw. Before you take antibiotics, there’s a few things you need to know. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Anti-biotic use skyrocketed over the years, with doctors prescribing them and patients requesting them in record numbers. This over prescribing has led to super bugs, germs that are unaffected by most of the treatments we have today. It’s also caused patients to have less options for even the most common illnesses. Before you fill and take an antibiotics ask the right questions, keeping in mind that viruses do not respond to anti-biotics. Also, get a good and clear understanding of the side effects. For example, a class of drugs called quinolones are contraindicated for athletes and active individuals because they can lead to tendon tears, yet many doctors prescribe them without giving the patients proper warning. If you have allergies to particular antibiotics, let your relatives know. They may be the point of contact in the case of an emergency.
