Here we go with yet another study that proves it’s time to put down the cigarettes and alcohol. Not only do they make you look old, they are aging you rapidly on the inside. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. A study published in the American Society of Human Genetics has given us even more proof that heavy drinking and any amount of smoking or even exposure to smoke, accelerates the aging process dramatically. Did you hear me carefully – that includes second hand smoke. Researchers were able to measure the epigenetic changes to DNA when exposed to these toxins. Next time you are tempted, take a look at that bad choice and ask yourself “Is this really worth giving up my youth? Is it really worth giving up my life?” You can break those bad habits, but you must take charge and make it a choice. If you have ever been around a preemie, you know how fragile they are. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. The special intravenous nutrition is what helps preemies thrive outside the womb. The University of Montreal made a great discovery which may save the lives of hundreds if not thousands of preemies. They studied babies between 26-31 weeks being fed intravenously with a highly nutritious substance. As it turns out, if this IV food mixture is exposed to light, it can actually produce oxidants that the baby is unable to fight off due to its premature immune system. Keeping the IV nutrition from light, gives the baby more of a chance of survival. The study showed as much as a 50% reduction in mortality– Sometimes the simplest things can make the biggest differences. This information is new, so if you know someone with a preemie, you may want to share this study with them. Are you team boxers or briefs? The debate over which type of underwear is best has been going on for years. Turns out, there is actually a scientific answer to this debate. New research out of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health suggests that the type of underwear you wear could affect fertility. So, which one is best? Boxers! The study found that fifty percent of the boxer wearing participants had a higher sperm count than those who wore briefs. The brief wearers also were more likely to have lower levels of FSH, making the production of sperm lower. If you are trying to get pregnant, you may want to switch up your type of underwear.

Need another reason to have more sex? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. People often believe that sex is not for the older population, but it’s the exact opposite and just what the doctor ordered! A new study out of Coventry University and Oxford University found that sexual intercourse can improve brain function in older adults. The study consisted of 73 people above 50 years old. The participants were given tests to check fluency, visuospacial ability, memory, and attention. Those who tested higher were engaging in sexual activity at least weekly. Scientists will need to perform more research to determine whether or not these changes are due to the physical activity or an emotional component of intercourse. But, they do know that it is good for you-so enjoy! This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Let’s talk about Ebola. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Ebola is a viral infection that can lead to organ failure, cause severe bleeding, and death. It is localized to Africa and there haven’t been any cases in the US since 2014. However, Ohio-based Clinical Research Management and the ELWA Hospital in Liberia have found that the virus can be passed through sperm. Not just passed through people who are currently showing symptoms, but can be transmitted through sperm up to TWO years after infection. It’s important to always use protection, especially when out of the country. Also, be sure to report any abnormal symptoms to your doctor after traveling outside of the US. Have you had your appendix removed? If so, it may be a good thing. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. New research out of Haukeland University suggests that having an appendix may play a role in developing Parkinson’s Disease. Parkinson’s Disease is a central nervous system disorder that affects nearly 10 million people worldwide. Scientists found that people who had their appendix removed were less likely to develop the disease. They also found the presence of a protein called alpha-synuclein in the appendix. This protein is also heavily associated with Parkinson’s Disease. Now, before you rush to your doctor and demand your appendix be removed, the chances of developing Parkinson’s are still small. More research will need to be completed to better understand how to the two are correlated. Are you eating too much salt? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Did you know that eating high amounts of salty foods can increase your risk of developing multiple sclerosis, or MS? MS is an autoimmune disease that affects nearly 2.5 million people worldwide. A new study out of Yale School of Medicine found that a diet rich in salt can be dangerous when it comes to developing MS, especially if you’re already genetically prone. Too much salt can lead to inflammation throughout the body and on the brain. When the brain becomes inflamed over long periods of time, it can trigger an autoimmune response. This response can lead to MS. Contact your doctor if you have questions about your daily salt intake. Are you thinking of having kids at an older age? You may want to have them before 35. Everyone knows that a pregnancy is considered high risk if a mother is older than 35 during conception. Turns out, the father’s age also plays an important role in a baby’s health. A new study out of Stanford University School of Medicine found that babies born to dads older than thirty-five were more likely to have health issues. The data was taken from over forty million live births and showed that after the age of 35, a man accumulated two new mutations in the DNA of his sperm yearly. These mutations have been linked to low birth weight and seizure disorders in infants.
