Are you thinking of having kids at an older age?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Everyone knows that a pregnancy is considered high risk if a mother is older than thirty-five during conception.  Turns out, the father’s age also plays an important role in a baby’s health.  A new study out of Stanford University School of Medicine found that babies born to dads older than thirty-five were more likely to have health issues.  The data was taken from over forty million live births and showed that after the age of thirty-five, a man accumulated two new mutations in the DNA of his sperm yearly.  These mutations have been linked to low birth weight and seizure disorders in infants.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Did you know that Parkinson’s Disease is the second most prevalent neurogenerative disease in the world?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Parkinson’s Disease affects nearly ten million people worldwide and causes chronic inflammation throughout the body.  This inflammation leads to a loss in cells that produce dopamine, causing extensive neurological damage.  New research out of University of Queensland in Brisbane may have found a way to stop the progression of Parkinson’s Disease.  Scientists were able to locate a molecule called MCC950 in mice.  This molecule was able to stop the progression of the disease by “cooling off” the inflamed brain of the mice with Parkinson’s Disease.  Researchers are hopeful and plan to start clinical trials by 2020.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Do you like to gamble?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Around ten million people in the US are addicted to gambling.  Why?  Well, a new study out of University of British Columbia in Vancouver suggests that it may have something to do with the lights and sounds associated with a casino.  The participants of the study had physical responses to their surroundings. When a participant won a prize, the audiovisual excitement associated with winning caused the pupils to dilate, activating the reward system in the brain.  Once activated, the need to win again overshadowed any risk of losing.  So, the next time you head to a casino, ask yourself whether or not the casino is trying to play tricks on you.  Also, seek help if you struggle with a gambling addiction.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Are you nuts about nuts?  That may be a good thing!  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Eating a small bowl of mixed nuts a day could help improve your cardiovascular health, memory, and sperm. Did you know that nuts can also aid in weight loss?  Two new studies out of Harvard and San Diego State University found that nut consumption can help kick start the metabolism.  On average, an adult gains 1 pound a year.  The study out of Harvard found that replacing 1 snack a day with 1 ounce of mixed nuts helped to prevent weight gain in adults.  The San Diego study found that Brazil nuts can decrease glucose levels and increase insulin release.  So, if you have type two diabetes, this should be your snack of choice!  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Do you drink energy drinks?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  It seems like everywhere you look someone has an energy drink in their hand.  Energy drinks are full of caffeine, taurine, b-vitamins, and other stimulating substances.  Studies have shown time and time again that excessive use of energy drinks can lead to heart problems.  So why do people still drink them?  Energy drinks are targeted towards students and young adults- offering a quick fix after a late night’s work. A drink every now and then can’t hurt, right?  Well, think again.  A new study out of McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston found that even drinking a single energy drink can have a negative impact on blood vessel function.  Next time you need a quick fix, go the natural route with either a cup of coffee or tea.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Ok, so it’s no secret that I hate tattoos, but there may be a new class of tattoos on the market soon. Biomedical tattoos. The Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering at ETH Zurich in Basel may have developed a unique way to monitor for early stage prostate, lung, colon and breast cancers. They have developed a synthetic gene network that can go under the skin, only appearing as a small mole if blood calcium levels are consistently high, a hallmark for some early stage cancers. If the mole appears, it isn’t a death sentence, quite the contrary, it gives the patient time to find and remove the cancer before it gets serious. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/04/180418141454.htm

Have you heard of the new “polio-like” virus infecting children all over the country?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  This condition is called acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM.  Although, the name has the word acute in it, there is nothing acute about the condition.  AFM has the CDC scrambling to try and figure out more about the condition.  Contrary to popular belief, AFM is not a new condition.  It was extremely rare until about four years ago when more cases began to pop up.  The CDC has found several viruses and environmental toxins can lead to the condition.  AFM effects the nervous system and can lead to slurred speech, droopy eyelids, difficulty controlling eye movements, difficulty swallowing, muscle loss in the arms or legs or death.   Contact your doctor if you suspect your child has AFM.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Everything in moderation, right?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Did you know that this rule doesn’t really apply to exercise?  It was previously thought that exercising greater than ninety minutes a day caused more harm than good.  A new study out of the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio proved this to be wrong.  In fact, the more aerobic exercise a person does a day, the better their health.  Aerobic exercises include: dancing, swimming, brisk walking, jogging, biking, and climbing stairs.  It’s time to break out the old sneakers and dust off that gym membership card, your body will thank you!  Talk to your doctor if you are worried about a fitness related injury and remember to let injuries heal before continuing your exercise program.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. Let’s talk antibiotics.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  It’s a common belief that the only way to treat cold or flu like symptoms is by taking antibiotics.  This is NOT TRUE.  In fact, antibiotics only protect against bacterial infections like sinusitis.  Most cold and flu like symptoms are caused by viruses.  Unfortunately, antibiotics do not work on viral infections.  You may be thinking that you would rather have the antibiotics “just in case”.  Think again!  Antibiotics kill the good bacteria in your gut, causing the bad bacteria to surface.  When this happens, it can put you at risk for all kinds of unwanted infections that may lead to hospital visits.  It is important to see your doctor if you are sick, but don’t be surprised if you leave without a prescription for antibiotics.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine.
