Ever felt like you were going to pass out in the heat? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. The summer months are upon us and that means summer heat. Unfortunately, this is a time when many people land in the emergency room, or worst die from the heat. Knowing the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion will help you stay safe. Also, keep in mind, the heat can get you even if you’re in the shade. When we’re hot, we sweat. That sweat can lead to dehydration very quickly. The usual rule of thumb for water intake is to take the number of your weight, cut that number in half and drink that many ounces. So someone 200 lbs needs 100 ounces. Here’s the key – you need another 8 oz for every 30 minutes you are in the heat. If you feel dizzy, have a headache, feel shaky or confused, the heat could be to blame. Don’t push yourself, get out of the heat and get hydrated.
