The Staying Young Show

Show Topic: Hip Replacement is not the end of the world with Dr. Steve Sanders

Co-Hosts: Dr. Gaman, Judy Gaman, Mark Anderson

Guests: Steve Sanders, MD (in studio)

Segment 1

As many of us are getting older or have aging parents, we face the real possibility that someone in our family will have a hip fracture, or have to have a hip replacement. They used to say that once you break a hip – it’s all down hill from there, but today we are going to have a leading orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Steve Sanders of Irving Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, in the studio with us who is going to change your mind about how you think about hip replacements.

  • (Connect) Tell some professional experiences you have had with good and also bad cases. Why it’s so important to have a good surgeon
  • Docs – discuss some of the reasons people experience hip fractures – falls, spontaneous breaks, etc.
  • Docs – why runners and some other athletes have hip problems
  • (Inspire) Hip surgery is not what it used to be-Dr. Sanders will be in the studio to discuss how hip replacement has changed and what that means for you and your loved ones

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK

Sometimes a study comes along that changes the way we do research. This particular study on pain was completed by researchers from McGill University, Duke University and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). They made a startling discovery. It turns out that male and female mice have a different pathway for pain transmission. This is significant because almost all pain research has historically been done on male mice. Now the NIH has stepped in and is now requiring that both male and female mice be tested when research results will effect both genders. So if you are of the 1 in 4 Americans that are suffering from chronic pain, you may see some significant changes in future pain medications, perhaps two classes, one of which will target primarily women with pain. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/296042.php
