Do you have an aquarium in your house? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Having an aquarium can improve your life. Who knew those cute little fish could have such health benefits. I remember being a child and it seemed that most houses had an aquarium, including mine. I always loved to stare at the fish and the little treasure chest at the bottom that would open and close with the bubbles. Well it turns out that that mindless staring probably had great benefits. Research shows that watching fish lowers stress and anxiety, almost like a form of hypnosis. People who own aquariums have lower blood pressure and tend to sleep better. Another study also showed that Alzheimer’s patients who had aquariums ate more and were less combative. Perhaps we should get back to having aquariums in our homes, offices, and even the hospital.
