So, you’re a smoker who has quit. Did you know adding two things to your diet can help repair years of lung damage? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Smoking can damage your lungs and it can take years to repair that damage. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health found that adding fresh fruit and tomatoes to your diet may help stop the decline in lung function. The researchers looked at over 650 adults from three different European countries. They found that those who consumed two tomatoes and three servings of fruit per day had better outcomes over a ten year period. This is just another study showing the link between nutrition and overall body health. Even if you’re not a past smoker, the research showed that having these things in your diet helps with maintaining lung health as you age. So, put fresh fruit berries and tomatoes on your grocery list each week.
