Did you know there is a new treatment for HIV? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. There is around 36.7 million people around the world living with HIV or AIDS. Not all of them are old cases, nearly 2 million people are recently infected. Although, HIV does not carry the same risks as it did in the past. People today are living with HIV and current medication regiments keep HIV from turning into AIDS, a life threatening decline in the body’s immune system. One of the ongoing issues for people with HIV is their ability to stay compliant with taking a combination of drugs twice a day or more. Now, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Brigham and Women's Hospital have developed a single capsule that can slowly release a whole weeks-worth of antiretroviral medication. This is a great thing because, if we can keep compliance numbers high, we can keep people from developing AIDS. The capsule, which has currently only been tested on animals, slowly releases enough medication each day of the week. Medical advancements are happening each and every day. This is why this Stay Young Medical Minute is being brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas. Patients fly in from all over the globe for their preventative and proactive approaches to health.
