Who do you think has a higher survival rate when it comes to crisis, famine, or epidemics, men or women? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. New research from Duke University shows that women are better at surviving crisis then men are. The researchers went back 250 years and analyzed mortality of those who lived through famine, disease and natural disaster. I don’t find this surprising because even in the blue zones, the areas where people live the longest, the women still outlive the men by an average of six months. Some scientists believe that estrogen may play a significant role due to its ability to boost and protect the immune system. I think it’s just innate – even in newborns that are born premature, the survival rate of females is higher than males. And others believe that it’s about the survival of the human race because women have the babies. Don’t take this personally guys, it’s just a fact.
