Is antibacterial soap necessary? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Probably about a decade or two ago, anti-bacterial soaps and hand sanitizers became extremely popular. The idea was to kill off as may bacteria as possible. The problem was that it also killed off the good bacteria and new research shows that an obsession with hand sanitizer could lead to a thyroid disorder. So what are we to do? Well, good hand washing techniques are just as effective without the bad side effects. Start with water, and believe it or not the temperature of the water doesn’t matter. Then add soap and lather for at least twenty seconds. Be sure to rub between the fingers and get the soapy water under the fingernails. Then rinse and dry. Not only will this help you ward off colds and the flu, it can also protect you against stomach bugs.
