Do you or someone you know have cancer? You may want to avoid a particular vegetable. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Many researchers have combined to look at the effects of diet on cancer. What some researchers found, including those at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute in the United Kingdom, is that vegetables that contain asparagine can increase the grown and spread of particular cancers. Asparagine is an amino acid that’s found in foods like asparagus, fish and potatoes. Researchers made the link because L-asparaginase, a chemotherapy drug works by inhibiting the production of the amino acid asparagine in the body. If reducing asparagine is important to reducing tumor growth, cancer patients may also want to limit it in their diets. My advice for cancer patients is to visit with a nutritionist and limit all foods rich in asparagine.
