Is your desk job making you sick? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Diabetes is on the rise across the country. As a matter of fact, the number of diabetics is a direct reflection of a societal shift that has happened over the last few decades. More and more people have desk jobs, often leaving them sitting for 2-4 hours at a time. Sedentary lifestyle is not just an indicator for diabetes, it can also lead to heart disease and cancer. So – here’s a few tips on how you can get more active Monday through Friday. First, take as many steps as you can. Start by parking away from the door and then when possible opting for the stairs instead of the elevator. Next, change some things about your work space, like buy a desk that allows you to alternate standing and sitting or trade your chair in for a large bounce ball. And get up and get some fresh air at lunch. Even if you brought your lunch, make a habit of walking around outside for at least 15-20 minutes. The exercise and fresh air at lunch will help energize you for round two. This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in proactive and preventative health.
