Garlic breath can ruin a good lunch meeting or a romantic dinner. But a few tips may help you freshen up quickly. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Garlic and onions contain sulfuric compounds that can lead to seriously bad breath. If you find yourself needing to cleanse quickly, here’s a few things that really work. First, a glass of milk helps, but it needs to be whole or 2% because the fat content of milk is what helps break down the compounds left behind by the garlic. Second, drink lemon water. It’s real common to ask for lemon with your water at a restaurant, so squeeze a few in your glass at the end of your meal, swoosh and swallow. If you’re a green tea drinker, have a cup of well steeped green tea. The catechins in green tea have been shown to freshen breath better than mints or gum. Now, once you get home be sure to brush and floss. If you have a tongue scraper use that too. This will keep the garlic smell from coming back the next day.
