Are you underweight?  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute.  If your BMI is less than 18.5 percent, you are considered underweight.  You may be thinking that is a good problem to have.  Think again.  Risks for osteoporosis, malnutrition, hair loss, and a bad immune system go up as your weight continues to go down.  Eating a few candy bars is not the best way to try to gain some weight.  Increase your milk intake and try a few protein shakes.  Rice, nut butters, avocados, dark chocolate, whole grain cereals, eggs, and dried fruits can also aid in fast and safe weight gain.  It’s important to track your weight and to build muscle, not just fat.
