MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM)
THAT MUSIC MEANS IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.
This is so counter intuitive. With all the talk we do on the gut microbiome, new research out of Tufts that was published in the journal Experimental Biology shows that wiping out the gut microbiome completely may be exactly what heart failure patients need. Now, this study was done on mice, but it looks promising. The science behind using a broad spectrum antibiotic for 5 weeks to suppress the immune system lies in the fact that heart failure patients see an increase in T-cells that actually cause the heart to enlarge. By wiping out the body’s natural ability to heal through swelling and scar tissue, the heart is preserved. Shockingly, the mice who were treated made almost a complete recovery from heart failure. More research is needed, but this is certainly fascinating and may result in a complete re-think of how cardiologists treat heart failure.
