Are you a drinker? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. A study published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation has linked heavy and binge drinking to Alzheimer’s Disease. Although multiple studies have been completed in the past, new research has been able to address how alcohol is affecting the brain itself. Scientists at University of Illinois at Chicago found that heavy drinking destroys protective mechanisms on the brain. The mechanisms are in charge of protecting the brain from outside damage. This degradation leads to inflammation of the brain. The inflammation leads to a pile up of a protein called amyloid beta. This protein is responsible for creating obstructive clusters that lead to Alzheimer’s Disease. Talk to your doctor if you think you may have a drinking problem.
