Thinking of taking an extra block around the park? Do it! This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. A new study published in The British Journal of Sports Medicine explored the health benefits of walking. This study was one of a kind. With a lead researcher from University of Sydney, the study spanned over two continents and included five different learning institutions. The study consisted of surveys from over 50,000 experienced walkers. They found that the faster you walk, the longer you will live. In fact, brisk walkers were 21% more likely to live a longer life. Like those odds? I do! If you want to live longer, try walking between 3.1 to 4.3 miles per hour for at least two hours a week. It’s never too late to start! In fact, people over the age of 60 experience the highest benefits of walking.
