Think you aren’t at risk for Alzheimer’s? Think again. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. The US medical journal Neuron recently published a study that may have linked the Herpes Virus to Alzheimer’s Disease. Before you think you are off the hook, it was linked to Herpes Viruses 6A and 7- not the sexually transmitted disease you may be familiar with. These viruses often work together and cause Roseola in infants and children. Both of the viruses are extremely common and were also found to cause inflammation in nerve cells on the brain. It is theorized that the inflammation caused by the virus can lead to Alzheimer’s. Although the study doesn’t actually prove that Herpes leads to Alzheimer’s Disease, it does provide a promising path for more research.
