Air pollution only effects people with asthma, right? Think again. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young medical minute. A new study out of Washington University School of Medicine found a link between air pollution and diabetes. Even levels of pollution said to be safe have been linked. The study found that pollution can actually trigger inflammation in the body and reduce insulin production. This means that the sugar in the body is not properly converting to energy, causing higher sugar levels. Although the risk is still higher for lower income countries with high pollution, the US still has a moderate risk of pollution related diabetes. Be sure to check your air quality daily and take precautions when pollution is high.
