Do you have allergies? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Nearly one in twenty people in the United States develop appendicitis. This usually happens when the appendix becomes blocked. You may be wondering what this has to do with allergies. Well, a new study out of Lund University and Skåne University Hospital in Sweden has linked having allergies to a lower risk of complicated appendicitis. The children in the study had pollen and animal fur allergies. Scientists still aren’t sure why they have a lowered risk, but they think it may have something to do with the immune system. Talk to your doctor if you experience pain in your right lower abdomen, a fever, and nausea or vomiting. These could be symptoms of appendicitis and can become life threatening.
