What’s that smell? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Did you know that there are different types of smell disorders? One of the most common being phantosmia. Phantosmia is a disorder that causes people to smell things that aren’t actually there. They are often referred to as “phantom smells”. You may think it sounds great--who wouldn’t want to smell flowers all day. Unfortunately, people with this disorder often smell unpleasant things like burning rubber, chemicals, something rotting, or cigarette smoke. Smell disorders are linked to other problems like: head trauma, brain tumors, nasal polyps, epilepsy, or even seasonal allergies. Talk to your doctor today if you are experiencing signs of Phantosmia or other smell disorders.
