Time for another mental health check. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Depression and anxiety have both been linked to low serotonin levels. But what is serotonin? It’s a chemical, often referred to as the “happy” chemical because it influence’s mood. Serotonin is also a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in the central nervous system. Low levels of this chemical can lead to mood changes, poor memory, anxiety, insomnia, and even sweet or starchy food cravings. Changing diet and exercise habits along with psychotherapy can help increase levels. However, sometimes, this is not enough and medication may be needed. This is why it is important to talk to your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of depression.
