How is your sex life affecting your health? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Procreation is no longer the only known benefit of sex.  A new study out of The Journal of Health and Social Behavior states that lowered risk for high blood pressure in women can be a nice side effect of satisfying sex.  It can also increase activity of brain networks, such as pain, emotion, and reward centers.  Many studies suggest that having sex can improve mood, decrease stress, and lead to better sleep.  So, light a few candles and see where the night takes you and your partner.  After all, you will love the health benefits!  Of course, it is important to practice safe sex within a monogamous relationship.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  A study from University of California, Davis (UC Davis) Center states that meditation may slow down aging in the brain.  The study spanned over 7 years and was actually endorsed by the Dalai Lama.  Meditation has been known to increase mental clarity and creativity.  Meditating one hour a day showed to be beneficial for participants in the study in even more ways.  The participants reported better coping and stress releasing abilities.  If you are hoping to sharpen your cognitive abilities, consider meditating daily.  Not only will it help you stay sharp, it can also reduce your stress levels; helping you to stay young.  This Stay Young Medical Minute is brought to you by Executive Medicine of Texas, a leader in preventative and proactive medicine. New finding shows that Canadians are getting fatter – and guess who is to blame – the US! The 1989 Canada-US Free Trade Agreement (CUSFTA) has been linked to Canadians taking in more calories per day. Canada saw a $5.26 billion rise in food and beverage imports from the US. Which led to an increase of approximately 170 kilocalories per person per day, contributing to weight gain of between 1.8-9.3 kg for men and 2.0-12.2 kg for women who were age 40.

This is Judy Gaman, author of the award winning book Age to Perfection: How to Thrive to 100, Happy, Healthy, and Wise and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute.  Each day I bring you one new tip that will help you stay young and vibrant.

Do you have a green thumb? If not, you should get one. Gardening has been proven to relieve stress and increase longevity. Connecting with the earth, the smells of the fresh herbs, and the simple exercise that comes with tending a garden all play a role in improving health. In two different studies, people in their 60s and 70s who regularly gardened had a 36% and 47% lower risk of developing dementia. My challenge to you is to find a place to garden, even if it is a small space, and plant something. Make this the year you enjoy nature and eat the fruits of your labor. We want to empower you with as much health information as possible. Visit Stayyoungamerica.com for free pod casts of the Staying Young Radio Show with over a hundred different health topics. As a society we have become way too dependent on eating out. Did you know that eating at home can help you lose weight? Restaurants are all about the taste and wanting you to come back. They accomplish that by injecting their food with oil, butter, and sugar. The average person curbs their meal by 130 calories by choosing to make their food themselves. I say we start a movement where we not only cook and eat at home, but we focus on teaching our kids to do the same. We want to empower you with as much health information as possible. Want to live longer and healthier? Get a pet. Owning a pet like a cat or dog has been proven to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, as well as decrease stress levels. Especially dog owners have the added benefit from lower rates of obesity. Walking that dog may just save your life, not just help you keep the pounds off, but ward off diabetes too. If you don’t already have a pet, consider going to the pound and rescue one. The life you save may just be your own. We want to empower you with as much health information as possible. Here is a tip straight from Grandma. Do you want to relive stress and improve brain power? Turns out that knitting and crocheting can help you do both. The repetitive nature of the hobby will keep your brain and body occupied, helping you find a break from all the stressors of the day. In 2003, a study was completed that found that knitters and those who crochet also had high cognitive function. So hit the craft or fabric store and find a new project – besides – crocheted sweaters and vests are very fashionable these days! We want to empower you with as much health information as possible. Recent research published in the medical Journal The Lancet reported that the number of adults with diabetes worldwide quadrupled from 108 million to 422 million between 1980 and 2014. Five countries the US, China, India, Brazil, and Indonesia carry half the diabetic population worldwide. Obesity is by far the greatest cause of this increase. This study is a wake-up call. So, put down your packed and processed food, increase your exercise, and don’t be just another statistic. We want to empower you with as much health information as possible. Are you an egg white eater? You really should rethink eating the yolk. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. For years, eggs got a bad rap. All the initial research on eggs raising cholesterol and adding to heart disease risk has been debunked. The reality is that eggs, including the yolk, are very nutritious and healthy and don’t have any significant risk for increasing bad cholesterol and causing heart disease. In fact, almost all or the nutrients in an egg are found in the yolk. One egg has only 75 calories but is packed with protein -7 grams of pure high-quality protein and only 5 grams of fat. The yolks contain iron, and numerous vitamins and other minerals. As a matter of fact, they contain high amounts of vitamin D3, a vitamin that many Americans are deficient in. Not all eggs are created equal and I recommend that you opt for eggs from free range chickens. So go ahead, start your day with two scrambled eggs. The protein will help keep you full and the nutrients will power up your brain for the full day ahead.
