Before you take antibiotics, there’s a few things you need to know. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Anti-biotic use skyrocketed over the years, with doctors prescribing them and patients requesting them in record numbers. This over prescribing has led to super bugs, germs that are unaffected by most of the treatments we have today. It’s also caused patients to have less options for even the most common illnesses. Before you fill and take an antibiotics ask the right questions, keeping in mind that viruses do not respond to anti-biotics. Also, get a good and clear understanding of the side effects. For example, a class of drugs called quinolones are contraindicated for athletes and active individuals because they can lead to tendon tears, yet many doctors prescribe them without giving the patients proper warning. If you have allergies to particular antibiotics, let your relatives know. They may be the point of contact in the case of an emergency. Do you know your waist to height ratio? You should. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. New research out of Latin America suggests that anxiety is higher in women with larger waist to height ratios. They studied 5,580 women with a mean age of 49.7 years. 58 percent were postmenopausal, and 61.3 percent reported anxiety issues. I don’t think they actually needed a study to tell us that a large waist in women is a risk factor for anxiety. When you look at the age studied and consider menopause, of course the risk for anxiety goes up. Furthermore, smaller waist size usually indicates a more active lifestyle. Parents, it’s time to talk to your kids about vaping. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. The University of California, San Francisco looked at the dangers of vaping in teens. While e-cigarettes were meant to be a way to wean adults off regular cigarettes, it appears to be a gateway for teens that leads to smoking. Researchers found that teens can also become addicted to e-cigarettes, but that is not the worst of it. They looked at 104 teens and found that those who vaped had a three times higher concentration of toxic compounds in their bodies. For those teenagers who used both tobacco cigarettes and e-cigarettes, the concentration of toxic chemicals in the body was an additional three times higher than those who only vaped. It also turns out that some of these flavors, though FDA approved in their natural state become carcinogenic when they’re heated. Teach those you love to say no to Vaping. There is more evidence that the diet we eat can help or hinder disease from spreading. Researchers out of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, found a link between the spread of a particular type of breast cancer and increased levels of the amino acid, asparagine. Asparagine is found in dairy, whey, beef, chicken, eggs, seafood, asparagus, potatoes, beans, seeds, soy, and even nuts. Since the variety of foods is so vast, it’s hard to say go vegan or vegetarian. This research was done on mice, but if the same holds true for humans, special diets that limit or eliminate asparagine may become part of the cancer treatment regimen.
