Uppsala University in collaboration with research groups around Europe found that women who drink tea may actually affect their epigenetics. We already knew that tea lowers estrogen levels, but new research shows that in women, epigenetic changes take place in women who drink tea. It has not yet been determined if those changes are good or bad, more research will be completed to determine that.

Having flakes on your collar? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. If you suffer from a flakey scalp it could be due to dry skin or an overgrowth of fungus on the scalp. Dandruff shampoos are readily available, but they can be expensive or smell bad. There are a few home remedies you could try first. Almost everyone has apple cider vinegar in the pantry, but maybe more of us should have it in the shower. The acidity can change the PH of the scalp making it hard for fungus to grow and flake off. Another great way to shed the flakes is to put two crushed up aspirins in your shampoo. Believe it or not, aspirin has the same active ingredient as many dandruff shampoos. And while baking soda is another great way to cleanse the scalp, if you use it be sure to follow it with a little tea tree oil so your hair doesn’t dry out. Remember, some of the best natural cures are right there in your pantry. Did you know your dry skin could be from something you’re eating? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. People don’t usually think food allergies when it comes to skin irritations. Unfortunately, they can go through life with dry skin or pesky itching and figure that’s just a fact of life, but it doesn’t have to be. Common foods like dairy, corn, wheat, or nuts could be the culprit. Food allergies don’t always cause the fatal reactions that we most commonly associate an allergy with. Chronic exposure to foods you are allergic to or sensitive to can cause long term inflammation. While there are tests for food allergies, you can also try simply eliminating things from your diet. Take food items out one at a time, but be sure to read labels so you aren’t getting trace amounts. Then reintroduce them slowly, one by one. Eventually, you may just find your answer and get relief from those skin issues. Fascinating study out of Columbia University which looked at people in the Ukraine who were subject to the famine of 1932-33 during early gestation – in other words, when they were still in utero. Turns out that those who were in areas exposed to famine early in the gestational development were 1.5 times more likely to develop diabetes later in life, compared to no risk when not exposed to famine and food shortages. It looks as though epigenetics and DNA are affected from the very early stages of life. Pregnancy is when nutrition is of the utmost importance, not only for the mom and new born baby, but for the future of that baby.

Not a fan of going to the doctor? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Doctor’s offices and hospitals can be the worst place to catch a cold or the flu. Sometimes, you can come out sicker than you went in. So here’s a few tips that may help keep you healthy. Schedule your well care, like physical exams outside of flu season, as a matter of fact, summer months are the best. Try to stay out of the emergency rooms and urgent care centers where the sickest of the sick often seek care. When you schedule your appointment ask if they have special hours for sick care or well care, then schedule accordingly. If they don’t have special hours, try to get the first appointment of the day so the office will be its cleanest. Wash your hands when you leave the office, because even if you don’t see anyone who’s sick, those germs can still be picked up off of door handles. Are you a runner? If so, how well do you pace yourself? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. There is a commonly held myth that runners are healthy people who will naturally live longer due to their strenuous exercise. The Copenhagen City Heart Study found quite the contrary. It turns out that joggers did live longer than those who didn’t exercise at all, but intense runners who ran too much and too fast, didn’t do themselves any favors and in some cases harmed their health putting their mortality equal to those who didn’t exercise at all. Bottom line – you need to pace yourself. So how long and at what pace you ask? One to two and a half hours a week and a slow pace of jogging seems to be the sweet spot. At this point, the heart gets a good workout and so does the rest of the body. So break out those running shoes, but don’t wear them out too soon. Did you know, there could be a link between depression and watching your favorite television show? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Don’t get me wrong, an hour on the couch curled with your favorite characters is fine, but don’t let it turn into four or five hours. Binge watching television is a where the real problem comes in. Researcher at the University of Texas in Austin found that catching up on your favorite series to the tune of hours at a time is hazardous to your health. Turns out that those who binge watch or do show marathons have a higher risk of depression. Not only is too much continuous watching bad for your mind, it’s also a recipe for a variety of other health problems. Other research has shown that sitting for long periods of time can slow metabolism, decrease blood flow, and lower hormone levels. So take those favorite shows in one at a time and keep moving the other hours of the day. Today’s show is all about auto-immune disease. Perhaps these are the most misunderstood diseases out there. When someone in your family, a friend or co-worker is stricken with an auto-immune disease, it can be hard to understand. That’s why we’ve decided to cover some of the most common ones. This hour, our focus will be on rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, celiac disease, Sjögren's syndrome, and Multiple sclerosis (MS)

  • Define auto-immune disease - A disease in which the body's immune system attacks healthy cells
  • Explain what separates an auto-immune disease from other diseases? Harder to diagnose? More long term? Etc?
  • Rheumatoid arthritis discussion
    • 200,000 cases diagnosed a year
    • The body's immune system attacks its own tissue, especially in the joints. Severe cases can include attack of the internal organs.
    • Causes painful swelling of the joint lining. Over long periods of time, can cause bone erosion and joint deformity. (Crooked fingers, hands, feet)
    • No cure for rheumatoid arthritis. Physiotherapy and medication can help slow progression. Managed with called anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDS)
    • Discuss classic presentation / labs ordered/ x-rays/ case studies

DOC SHOCK

the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), invented a hydrogel to fight rheumatoid arthritis. This jelly-like material could be used to absorb extra fluids in swelling joints and release drugs. Immune cells at the inflamed joints are the main source of nitric oxide accumulation. While some nitric oxide is good, too much actually is what causes the damage. This gel will help reduce fluid and nitric oxide levels. Perhaps the closest thing to a cure so far, since it deals with the problem and not just managing the symptoms.

Lupus – An inflammatory disease caused when the immune system attacks its own tissues.

  • Risk goes up after age 19
  • Affects both men and women, more common in women
  • Lupus (SLE) can affect the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs.
  • Symptoms include fatigue, joint pain, rash, and fever. Cyclical with bouts of pain and remission.
  • No cure. Current treatments focus on improving quality of life and reducing/controlling symptoms. T
  • People with Lupus stay out of the sun and always wear sun screen SPF 30 or greater
  • Anti-inflammatory diet
  • Disease management includes medications, such as anti-inflammatories and steroids.
  • Probiotics important as with any auto-immune disease
  • Case studies, labs, etc

Sjögren's syndrome

  • The body's immune system attacks its own healthy cells that produce saliva and tears.
  • Symptoms – irritated red or dry eyes, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing
  • Often occurs in conjunction with lupus or RA
  • Risk higher as you age
  • Affects both men and women, more common in women
  • Case studies, tests, etc

The whole show has been about auto-immune disease. While we’ve already covered rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and Sjögren's syndrome, I want to focus on celiac disease – something we are way too familiar with.

Celiac Disease

  • The immune response to eating gluten creates inflammation ultimately damaging the small intestine's lining. This inflammatory process can cause other medical complications.
  • Malabsorption of nutrients.
  • Symptom include diarrhea, bloating, gas, fatigue, low blood count (anemia), and osteoporosis. Some people may have no GI symptoms, but have an inflammatory process that goes undiagnosed.
  • Strict gluten-free diet that can help manage symptoms
  • Affects all ages
  • People with celiac disease are at-risk for serious health consequences, like other autoimmune diseases, osteoporosis, thyroid disease, and even certain cancers.
  • An estimated 1 in 133 Americans, or about 1% of the population
  • 83% of Americans who have celiac disease are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed with other conditions.
  • 6-10 years is the average time a person waits to be correctly diagnosed

When’s the last time you inventoried your medicine cabinet? That’s probably too long. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Today’s tip is all about cleaning out the bathroom cabinet. Things like cough medicines, sunscreens, antiseptics, and even bandaids can expire and go bad. Expiration can either mean that they are no longer effective or safe. When you start your inventory and replenish task, look for expiration dates, unsealed packages, bandaid wrappers that have discolored and toss them out in the trash. Even sunscreen from last year should be replaced, especially if you exposed it to high temperatures. Just remember to keep a list of what you throw away so that you can replace it. There’s nothing worse than headed to the cabinet only to find that your peroxide bottle is empty or you don’t have any antibiotic cream for a cut. Keep your medicine cabinet neat, tidy, and up to date because it’s something you normally don’t’ think of until it’s too late. Are you fan of e-cigarettes? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. E-cigarettes are being passed off as a healthy option for smoking, but they come with real health risks. So you decided to stop smoking regular cigarettes or you think it might be cool to start “vaping.” Well, not so fast. The New England Journal of Medicine has reported that these e-cigarettes may contain high levels of a chemical like formaldehyde. As you know, formaldehyde causes cancer. Currently, e-cigarrettes are not regulated and the FDA is trying to decide the best way to monitor the health risks. My advice to you – don’t even think about it. First of all, you don’t look cool. Secondly, it’s not worth the risk. If you need something to do with your mouth – try keeping healthy snacks on hand– but don’t try e-cigarettes or any type of cigarette for that matter.
