Is there someone you are really mad at right now? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Being mad at someone temporarily is a natural, human emotion, but holding a grudge can cause you more harm than good. When we hold bad feelings towards other people it actually makes us age prematurely. Our bodies have surges of cortisol when we think negative thoughts and being angry doesn’t solve the problem. Being able to forgive is important for overall health. Let’s face it, when we’re mad, we tend to do things like eat junk food, watch television, and maybe even drink more alcohol. If you’re having trouble getting past your frustrations, take up exercise. Running, or better yet, kickboxing, will help you burn off the bad hormones and raise the good ones. When you feel good about yourself, you are more likely to feel good about others too. Exercise is free and it has more health benefits that just about anything else you can do, besides good nutrition. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. It’s all too easy to become sedentary, especially if you have a desk job. These five tips will help keep you moving. First, always take the stairs not the elevator. Second, if you want to watch television, do it while you stand and fold clothes or walk on your treadmill. Third, have a walking lunch and get your co-workers involved too. Fourth, take evening strolls with your kids or spouse. And lastly, change your attitude about exercise, start to see it as a gift, instead of a punishment. As many of us are getting older or have aging parents, we face the real possibility that someone in our family will have a hip fracture, or have to have a hip replacement. They used to say that once you break a hip – it’s all down hill from there, but today we are going to have a leading orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Steve Sanders of Irving Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, in the studio with us who is going to change your mind about how you think about hip replacements.

Sometimes a study comes along that changes the way we do research. This particular study on pain was completed by researchers from McGill University, Duke University and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).They made a startling discovery. It turns out that male and female mice have a different pathway for pain transmission. This is significant because almost all pain research has historically been done on male mice. Now the NIH has stepped in and is now requiring that both male and female mice be tested when research results will effect both genders.
