An interesting fact about the intricacy of the human body, your left lung is smaller than your right lung—and that’s to make room for your heart. For most people, if they were asked to draw a picture of what the lungs look like they would draw both looking roughly the same size. While the lungs are fairly similar in size, the human heart, though located fairly centrally, is tilted slightly to the left. An easy way to remember which side your heart tilts is to think about saying the pledge. We cover our right hand over our heart, meaning it also tilts slightly to the left.

Well, do you need another reason to hate Monday? Did you know that Monday is the day of the week when the risk of heart attack is greatest? Yet another reason to loathe Mondays! A ten year study in Scotland found that 20% more people die of heart attacks on Mondays than any other day of the week. Researchers theorize that it’s a combination of too much fun over the weekend with the stress of going back to work that causes the increase. Therefore, you need to pace yourself. Make sure that Sunday is truly a day of rest so you’re ramped up to handle the upcoming week. And, do yourself a favor and try to make Monday an eight hour day, instead of your longest day of the week.

A new study based on the TV show “survivor” found that humans can survive longer without food than sleep. While you might feel better prepared to stay up all night partying than to give up eating, that feeling will be relatively short lived. Provided there is water, the average human could survive a month to two months without food depending on their body fat and other factors. Sleep deprived people, however, start experiencing radical personality and psychological changes after only a few sleepless days. On a much smaller scale, missing sleep, even if it’s a few hours each week, can have its consequences. Be sure to get at least seven and a half hours a night if you want to be productive and less stressed.

Have you ever heard the term “love drunk?” Well, some of it is true, when in love, the human brain releases the same cocktail of neurotransmitters and hormones that are released by amphetamines! Amphetamines are some one of the most powerful drugs, and can cause lots of harm. So instead of drugs, get high on love, but remember to always love responsibly. This “drunk” feeling of love can lead to an increased heart rate, loss of appetite and sleep, and intense feelings of excitement. Be careful though, it can also lead us to make rash, dangerous, and risky decisions. So love others, but love responsibly. Make good, sound choices when you’re drunk on love because some of those decisions stick with you for life.

#2—Did you know that by the age of 60, most men and women will have lost about half their taste buds. Since our sense of taste helps us identify spoilage, seniors need to be extra careful with leftovers. Over time our taste buds dull by become less sensitive. This is probably why older folks need much more intense flavoring in order to be able to fully appreciate a dish, and retirement homes will sometimes “spike” their food with a bit of sugar or salt to intensify the taste for their crowd. Ironically, more salt and sugar as we age is worse for your health. If you find your food to be bland, try pepper and herbs from the garden instead.

Here’s a fact that will make you more likely to step away from the lunch buffet a bit earlier than expected. New studies show that after eating too much, your hearing is less sharp. If you’re heading to a big meeting after a weekday lunch, or a concert or a musical after a big date night meal you may be doing yourself a disservice. Try eating a smaller meal if you need to keep your hearing pitch perfect. As for you guys that have selective hearing when it comes to your spouse, now you have a new excuse to use. But then again, eating too much is not only bad for your hearing, it’s bad for your health, and can be bad for your marriage too. It all goes back to the same old adage, all things in moderation.
