Have you heard the old saying “comparison is the thief of joy”? Well what if I told you that sometimes comparison is a good thing, especially when it comes to working out? According to a study from Ohio, harnessing a personal rivalry can motivate runners to train and race harder and faster. So the next time you want to crush a 5K, look to a rival you already have or form a new one. Ideal rivals are similarly aged people of the same gender who have run many races together and tend to finish with similar times. If you’re not a runner, you can simply get a contest going between you and a spouse or friend at the gym. Find someone to not just motivate you, but to compete with you. It might just be the fire you need get you up and going again.

If you only tune into a certain type of music when working out, you may be onto something. Research suggests specific musical styles can influence sports performance in different ways. Jazz music, for instance, seems to enhance golf putting performance, country music may improve batting success, rap music appears to improve jump shots and running achievements have been linked to up-tempo music. Of course, such evidence must be taken with a grain of salt. And here’s a little tip that may work for you – pick different styles of music for different moods you need to be in. For example, classical for brain power and rock or pop to get pumped for an important meeting. Remember that the link between music and thoughts is a closely tied.

Fiber is an important part of healthy diet. Getting high amounts not only keeps you regular, it also helps prevent colon cancer. I bet you may have never heard of Scandinavian crispbreads, but a serving has 18 grams of fiber), 1 slice of German rye or pumpernickel bread has 6 grams of fiber and 3 grams of protein, 1 cup of blackberries or raspberries has 7 to 8 grams of fiber, 1 medium artichoke has 7 grams of fiber, and 1/2 cup of legumes such as beans, peas or lentils has 5 to 8 grams of fiber and 5 grams of protein). Beware of so-called fiber bars, because those packaged and processed fiber options may also be loaded with lots of ingredients you don’t need.

In a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, participants who upped their fiber intake – without changing anything else in their diets – lost about five pounds and actually kept it off. Take a cue from them and incorporate protein AND fiber into your meals and snacks to increase that full feeling. Getting the right balance of fiber and protein will also help your body hold onto more muscle mass while you lose weight. Try, for example, adding protein-rich almond butter to your fibrous apple, enjoying a bowl of protein-packed plain, Greek yogurt topped with fiber-filled raspberries or making turkey or chicken sandwiches with high-fiber, whole-grain sprouted bread or wraps.
