When’s the last time you had a bowl of oatmeal? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Most Americans are lacking enough fiber in their diet. Are you one of them? Maybe it’s time to change your morning routine and include oatmeal. The Brits think so. The British Medical Journal published a study showing that increasing your fiber intake by 10 grams was associated with a 15 percent lower risk of mortality. Want to really ramp up the fiber? Add some flax seeds and raspberries to your oatmeal. You’ve heard of probiotics, those good bacteria that live in your gut, well they need something to eat too. They eat prebiotics, which generally are sources of fiber. Heal your gut, heal your whole body. Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Our website is loaded with valuable information on more than 100 different health topics. Your body will thank you, for visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM.

Co-Hosts: Dr. Gaman, Judy Gaman, Mark Anderson

Today’s show is all about the importance of prevention. Today we are living longer than ever before, but how we live out those years is even more important than what number we live to.

  • (Connect) Our own aspirations to stay young and healthy. Maybe throw out some family history we are trying to avoid. The one thing that we would not want to get.

  • (Inspire) It’s never too late and you are never too old to start taking care of yourself – a few things you can do right now to start (no diet sodas or artificial sweeteners, exercise regularly, keep a good attitude, have a physical, eat veggies)

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK

Doc Shock of the day

Do you have a spouse or partner with cancer? The US Cancer Institute studied the wellbeing of cancer survivors based on the attitude of the spouse or those around them. They found that cancer patients who were surrounded by a spouses or partner with a healthy attitude was less likely to develop depression. We know that having a good attitude greatly effects outcomes in illness, so staying happy and upbeat may be hard, but your significant other is depending on it.

Listen up girls. How much sleep are you getting? I bet it’s not enough. Some pains require immediate attention. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Most women in the United States are drastically sleep deprived. If you’re only getting 6 hours a night, you’re missing 45 hours per month. This triples your risk for heart disease. Cut that sleep back to 4 hours a night and it doubles the chance that you’ll die of heart disease. Need another reason to make sleep a priority? Cutting back on sleep decreases your levels for leptin, a hormone that regulates hunger. Without leptin, we over eat and gain weight. You have the power to live a healthier future! Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Our website is loaded with valuable information on more than 100 different health topics. Did you know that healthy fat is good fat? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Fat has gotten such a bad rap over the years, probably because theirs too much bad fat found in our packaged and processed foods. Unfortunately, people have gone overboard and thrown out the good fats too. Good fats are the ones we need to keep our brains working and our bodies in good health. Make sure your have these good fats on your grocery list: Coconut oil, avocados, nuts, and even unsalted real butter. That’s right – I said butter, not a lot but a little and never buy that “fake butter” that’s filled with unhealthy oils. There's so much to know about living healthy... and that's why you can find all of our Medical Minutes and The Staying Young Radio Show at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Let us help you live better, live longer! Join me, at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM.

Have you ever paid attention to what and how much you drink each day? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Most people count the calories they eat but ignore the calories they drink. What you drink may be just as responsible for those extra pounds as what’s on your plate. If you’re a juice drinker, you could be putting yourself at risk for developing diabetes. A cup of orange juice is the same as eating four oranges. Even bottled ice teas can be loaded with sugar. I recently saw a green tea with 36 grams of sugar! Be smart, read labels. Drinking water is great and I even think adding fruit or cucumber slices to flavor the water is a great idea. Drink to stay hydrated, not to fill up. IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

In the U.S., colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of death from cancer among women and the second in men, mostly due to our diets. The American Cancer Society estimate that in 2017, more than 95,500 people will develop cancer of the colon. BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine published a study showing the colon cancer preventing properties of our old friend Resveratrol. It appears that Resveratrol, along with Grape seed extract are good at promoting bacterial diversity, but also preventing chronic diseases and eliminating the colon cancer stem cells.

What if I told you the secret to longevity is free and always available? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. People are always reaching for anything to help them live longer and healthier lives. Research shows that one of the biggest indicators for a longer life is prayer or meditation. Now we know why. A study using functional MRI looked at the brains of monks who were deep in prayer and meditation and found that a part of their brain that is usually at rest is actually lit up. This could explain why cultures that pray or meditate have not only more years, but more healthy years.   For more unique and useful health information on more than 100 different topics, visit STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM where you can also find my book, Aged to Perfection, How to Thrive to 100, Happy Healthy & Wise. Ever wonder why some smokers have an easier time quitting the nasty habit than others? Well, a new research study from Duke Medicine followed 85 smokers, taking MRI scans of their brains before and after kicking the habit. 44 of the smokers were successful, while 41 relapsed. The smokers who had success had MRI scans that showed a better connection between the insula, the part of the brain that controls urges and cravings, and the somatosensory cortex, a part of the brain that controls motor function.
