Have you ever wondered about how many dreams you have a night? Why you sometimes remember them and sometimes can’t? Some research suggests that people who dream actually have a higher IQ. The trick here is that most people, even with the highest intelligence, can’t remember their dreams. When you do remember them, they may feel like they lasted all night long. The truth is, dreams only last a few seconds and you have lots of them all night long. Most dreaming happens in stage five which is called rapid eye movement or REM sleep for short. Getting adequate sleep is important to cognitive function. Perhaps there’s the link – people who actually have good quality sleep are naturally smarter!

You’re nerves are at work for you every minute of every day. Have you ever wondered how you react so fast? Well, your nerves send messages to your brain in record speed – 170 miles per hour to be exact. That speed is what keeps you from burning your hand on a hot pan or crashing into the car in front of you when they stop suddenly. If you suffer from diabetes, your nerves can be affected. Since the nerve/brain communication can be faulty, it’s important to check your body for injury. For example, a diabetic can easily burn their feet on hot cement and not even know it. If left untreated, it could cause a serious infection. Bottom line, nerves are great when they work and can be troublesome when they don’t.

Do you know how tall you are? Well, I guess that depends on what time of day you measure yourself. During our waking hours, we tend to shrink a little we move around and complete our tasks. Some of the shrinkage is due to the spine, which is full of fluid when you wake up, but it reduces with activity, compressing the spine slightly. Other loss is due to the compression of other joints, like your knees. For most of us, we’re taller first thing in the morning. For night shift workers, however, they’re tallest when they first wake up, regardless of what time of day or night that might be. If your vertically challenged like me – I think I’ll be sure to go with that 6am height.

As women, we need to be very much aware of our bodies. Paying attention to symptoms could save our life. For example, do you know the symptoms of ovarian cancer? If you're like most women, you don't. Some of the first signs of this type of cancer can be a change in bowel habits or lower back pain. Feeling full or bloated can also be a symptom. Some women don't have any symptoms at all. That's why a yearly physical exam is so important. Early detection is critical to the chances for a positive outcome. Be sure to have your exams and see the doctor right away if you have unusual symptoms or notice changes. Listening to your body could ultimately save your life.

It's all too easy to get caught up in convenience when it comes to kids snacks. The manufactures know that flashy packaging on the outside and added salt and sugar on the inside is what sells. Save your children from the pitfalls of poor health by training their pellets while they are young. Healthy snacks include fruit, especially berries, yogurt, applesauce, fig bars, and raw  veggies. Have these things readily available but also control the portion sizes. Children do not need the same serving size as adults so adjust accordingly. Give the gift of health to your kids--it's the gift that keeps on giving, long after you're gone.

Have you ever set a big goal or New Year's resolution to get healthy at all costs? We often bite off more that we can chew when it comes to health goals. I suggest that you take these five baby steps toward a healthier you. 1. Replace your sugary or diet drink with a bottled water each day. 2. Take the steps instead of the elevator. 3. Eat breakfast containing protein, preferably an egg 4. Incorporate a healthy snack of one raw vegetable per day 5. Eat 10-15 berries a day These small but easily doable things will get you on the right track. Change is all about walking the walk of health before you start the marathon.

Sometimes we think we are reaching for a healthy option, when in reality, it's not really healthy at all. Granola is one of those items that you need to read the label on. The grains may be healthy, but manufacturers often lace the grains with sugar, or worse yet, artificial sweeteners. They have a tendency to also do this with dried fruit and nuts that go into granola. Some brands have as much as 450 calories for just a cup. Look for brands that only contain pure ingredients and no added artificial colors or flavors. Also, avoid brands that use sugar or other sweeteners.

Sometimes you need to step back and re-evaluate your life. If you're too busy or you've been overextending yourself, it's time to become the no girl or the no guy, even if it's just for a little while. maybe it's time to take a break and spend a little time relaxing and enjoying life.
