caught a cold or flu? Sitting on the couch and relaxing probably sounds like

the best course of action until you’re feeling better—but a new study from the

university of New York suggests that your regular exercise routine will not only

help ward off a minor illness, but will make you feel better WHILE you’re under

the weather. Improving circulation is good for your health. On the flip side, serious

illness requires significant rest. And don’t forget, some antibiotics, like quinolones

can cause tendon rupture, so check with your physician first, before you kit the

gym when taking medications for infection.

I bet you thought that you’re better hydrated in colder weather? It makes

sense…you’re sweating less so you’re able to hold more water. However, new

studies suggest that the cold air and indoor heaters can actually dehydrate you

MORE than a 20 minute walk…and it can severely and rapidly dry out your skin.

Make sure you drink at least half your body weight number in ounces of water

each day, summer and winter to keep yourself hydrated. Being properly hydrated

will also help improve your skin health and ward off blemishes. Proper hydration

will also improve your cognitive function and give you the energy you need to

make it through the fall and winter months.

There are a few things in life that are true super foods. Many things are labeled as them, but don’t actually foot the bill. For example, Goji Berries. I fell into the habit of eating these berries because of the claims listed on the bag. Little did I know that these berries actually have high levels of Lectins. Lectins are not good for our body and can actually cause leaky gut syndrome. It turns out that in 2006, the FDA actually came after the manufacturers of Goji Berries for making false claims on their packaging. Many people experience arthritis, eczema, and heart issues as a result of foods high in lectin. Do your research and avoid such foods, it may save your life.

Have you been sold on the health benefits of wheat grass? Are you one of the thousands of people who have wheat grass added to their smoothie each morning? If so, stop the madness. The science behind consuming wheat grass due to its high chlorophyll level is float out wrong. We were not designed to eat grass of any sort. Cows have four stomachs, enough to digest that chlorophyll. We don’t, we have one, and it wasn’t designed to digest wheat grass. Instead, consuming it can cause an inflammatory response because our body sees it as a toxin. This is also why grasses make our four legged friends, cats and dogs, vomit. Next time you have the option – forgo the wheat grass.

Soy has been all the rage in quote healthy options, but soy is not as healthy as you think. Soy contains phytoestrogens which upset the thyroid and the adrenal glands. What does that mean to you? Well, for starters, weight gain and lack of energy. If you spend your day eating veggie burgers, drinking soy milk, or even eating so called energy bars that contain soy, you may be doing more harm than good. A healthy body is a delicate balance of hormones. The high level of phytoestrogens in soy, disturb that delicate balance and can leave you feeling and looking bad, even though you thought you were doing something that is good for you. If you are a parent, read labels, kids can be highly affected by soy products, so keep them out of your house.

We have all heard of diabetes, but do you know what diabetes feels like? Many people walk around with blood sugars that can go too high or too low and never think to have their symptoms checked out. When your blood sugar goes too high, which often happens to diabetics after meals they may experience people may feel fatigued, excessively thirsty, or have to urinate frequently. Over time, diabetics who are not treated may also have pain in their feet or numbness and tingling in their extremities. Blood sugars that fall too low may cause dizziness, weakness, or anxiety. Do you know your numbers? A fasting glucose should range between 80-130 and an A1C, the test that measures blood sugars over the course of three months should stay below 5.6. Know your numbers, save your life.

It has long been said that the smart people make more money, but here’s a twist. It could be that those who are in debt and poverty between the ages of 18-30 set themselves up for early cognitive decline. The study followed 3400 males and females, different races and backgrounds for twenty five years. During the course of time, the participants reported income levels, as well as participated in cognitive testing. The results showed a direct correlation to a premature cognitive decline and ongoing poverty. Being a research professional myself, I have to play devil’s advocate here. I have to wonder if those same people would have gone through cognitive exercises and exposure to new things, and limited television time, if the results would have been the same. Just food for thought.

Today we Have 10 Steps to a Healthier and Happier Home. We’ll handle the

healthier and we have a special guest, Dr. Fran Walfish, America’s Favorite

Psychologist who will be joining us for the Happier.

 Explain how the 2 go hand in hand – healthier means happier. Give

examples of patients that get their health together and then their life falls

into place.

 Tip 1 – have your hormones check and keep them balanced

 Tip 2 – know all your numbers and always strive for better

 Tip 3 – Exercise

 Tip 4 – Take “screen breaks” as a family

 Tip 5 - Change your diet

6. Give up trying to control other people, especially your spouse/partner.

7. View people as good until they demonstrate otherwise. Most people are good.

Those who are not will reveal themselves in time and you can weed out the ones

who are not worthy of your friendship.

8. Give yourself Special Time. Take 10-15 minutes each day to be with yourself

and chill. You'd be surprised how challenging this is when you have a spouse and

children tugging at you 24/7. Give yourself short, undivided, positive attention

each day for nourish and fortify you.

Let differences work for them. All couples are made with two different people. No

two people in the world are just alike. And, after working with hundreds of

couples, I’m convinced opposites often do attract. But, great couples learn to build

upon those differences. They build upon each other’s strengths and let each other

minimize their weaknesses. “Two are better than one” — the author of Ecclesiastes

says — and great couples live this truth.

Extend grace for the minor annoyances. Can we just be honest? People do stuff

that gets on our nerves at times. That’s true of all of us — even with the people —

maybe even especially with the people we love the most. Great couples have

learned not to let those little things distract from the major things — like love and

commitment.

Serve each other. There are no 50-50 splits of responsibility in a great marriage.

Great couples learn to sacrificially serve one another. In the best relationships, it

would be difficult to judge who serves one another more. There may be be times

one gives 100%, because the other can’t give anything. And there are other times

the other spouse gives 100%. And neither complains when it’s their turn to give

all.

Prioritize their time. Great couples spend time together. Life is busy for all of us.

These couples schedule time together. They find things to do that each of them

enjoy. And, they say no to other things that would keep them from having adequate

time together.

Keep no secrets. There are no hidden issues among great couples. They are

vulnerable with each other. Both partners open themselves up to the other person

completely.

Publicly support each other. Great couples are supportive of each other in public.

They don’t tear each other down in public. They handle private issues in private.

Keep no record of wrongs. Great couples learn to forgive. There aren’t any

lingering issues that haven’t been resolved.

9. Be kind and nice to your child(ren).

10. Never engage in negotiations, bargaining, or deal-making.
