A recent study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine found that

people who keep a food journal lose twice the weight of those who rely on dieting and exercising

without a tracking system. Create your own health journal and start with logging what you eat.

It’s easier to monitor something you measure. If you find that you’re exercising, eating right and

still can’t seem to lose the pounds – it could be your hormones. Estrogen, testosterone, and

thyroid fluctuations can all cause weight gain. If you’re having trouble losing weight, be sure to

get a complete physical exam.

Fuel yourself for your walk, and for your workday, through healthy eating. With health and

wellness, every small change counts. Three important things will help you fuel your day: Don’t

skip breakfast, it’s the most important meal of the day. Pack healthy snacks so you are not at the

mercy of the vending machine at 3:00 p.m. And last but not least, stay hydrated with water.

Beware of an overdependence on caffeine to get you out of bed and through that afternoon

slump. Too much caffeine can keep you up at night, and also lead to dehydration. A few minutes

of preparing cut veggies and grabbing some bottled water will make for a better workday.

Did you know that the average person eats out 205 times a year? That is equivalent to

buying lunch out four times a week!!!! We get it--It is easy and convenient to order out for lunch

and dinner, but many times these foods are loaded with more sodium, saturated fat, and

cholesterol than home-made food. Diets high in sodium, saturated fat and cholesterol are linked

to higher risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity. Though you may know that

grilled, baked and steamed foods are better options than fried foods, marinated, pickled, smoked,

teriyaki, or soy sauce, which can be loaded with Sodium. Even if you’re into cold cuts, watch for

added sodium and preservatives.

Did you know that when you exercise, you sweat, and when you sweat you LOSE water and

minerals? I bet you knew some of that information—but you may not be aware just how

important to replace the water you lose when you sweat. Water should be the primary source of

hydration, not sports drinks or some of these so called electrolyte drinks. Energy drinks are NOT

sport drinks and should never be used to replace water. Most Energy drinks contain CAFFEINE.

Couple that with exercise and your heartrate can go too high. Not just that, caffeine causes the

body to lose water and can sometimes cause anxiety, headaches, stomachaches and sleep

problems.

Lately, everything is getting bigger, from plates and bowls, to our waistlines and even the

“average” pants sizes. Not only is our food supersized, we’re becoming super sized too. This

leads to diabetes, heart disease, and even some cancers. Here are some tips to help you keep your

portions under control. For example, a deck of cards is equal to a serving of meat, fish, or

poultry. A serving of fruit is about the size of a tennis ball. Eat three meals a day; this will help

you eat sensible portions so you won’t overeat later. Also, serve food on smaller plates and don’t

bring extra food to the table. Skip the “clean plate” club—we don’t exercise as much as our

ancestors did, so we can’t burn all that food off. Better yet, don’t waist it – just take smaller

portions.

It can be incredibly powerful to put kids in charge of their own health. Give them the reigns

at dinner, let them have the power to create healthy food for themselves. Have children make a

potato fixin’s bar by choosing their own toppings for half a baked potato. Arrange separate bowls

and serving utensils for refried beans, black-eyed peas, chopped chicken tenders, shredded low-

fat cheese, sliced cherry tomatoes, thinly chopped spinach, and grated carrots for children to

build their own baked potato. It so important to cook together too. Allow children to learn about

foods by letting them help prepare them. By teaching your kids the value of cooking at home and

family meal time is something that will also bless your children’s children.

A leading pediatrician in the field of preventative medicine suggest that making food fun

may be the key to setting up good food practices. Dr. Anderson Lee suggested you serve things

like “Shark Pockets” (stuff half a whole-wheat pita pocket with canned light tuna, spinach,

shredded carrots, and a little salad dressing). You could also try “Peanut Butter Roll-Ups”

(spread a thin layer of peanut butter on a small whole-grain tortilla, top with grated carrots, and

roll it). Remember that you are competing with colorful and entertaining boxes that have been

masterminded by the food industry. Well, I think you are a mastermind too, so get creative.

Make your kid’s plates colorful, fun, and healthy.
