Adults need to be smart in their protein choices so we can get the most out of what we eat.
Studies suggest that our choices in protein aren’t the best. For example hamburgers and hot dogs
are not the best options. Start with lean choices for meat and meat alternates, these will give you
high protein with less fat. Don’t make the mistake of adding cream sauces, butter, and gravy to
your meats – that just adds calories, fat, and carbs. If you cook at home, be sure to trim the fat
before you cook, that keeps the fat from seeping into the meat. You can keep your meat healthy
by searing it first to hold the natural juices and keep it tender.

These foods include fish, shellfish, dry beans and peas, nuts, and seeds, as well as lean meats, poultry, and eggs. New York University recently said that most children 2 years and older do not consume enough protein. Their bodies need protein to grow. Fish, shellfish, beans and peas can also be a great source of protein. Even peanut butter contains protein. Remember that proteins are building blocks for a stronger, healthier, and happier body. You’re the parent and you’re in charge, so take charge of their health today – they will thank you tomorrow.

Food and beverage companies use extra sugar and colorful marketing to reel kiddos in. All
those extra calories are empty calories, leaving our children with a lack of nutrients. Added
sugars make it hard for children to maintain a healthy weight and a healthy brain. Since fruits are
naturally sweet, it can be easy to get children to eat them without adding sweeteners like sugar,
corn syrup, and honey. Serve your kids fresh fruit rather than dried or the fruit snack version-- -
cut pieces into funny shapes or a cool design to draw in the little ones. And remember, berries
have high nutritional content and pears are low on the glycemic index. Good nutrition makes for
smarter and happier kids.

Did you know that your college kid may not be covered under your regular insurance once they move out of state? Not all insurance plans cover those kiddos that are “out of area” and some plans won’t have any qualified physicians within the plan in the area your kiddo moves and resides. Do yourself AND your kid a favor and ensure that your medical insurance covers physicians in the area, and covers your kid once they move away. If you aren't going with your school's insurance plan, make sure that your parent's or your own insurance covers doctors in your area too! It’s also important to make sure your kid gets a proper physical and vaccinations prior to going off to college---to help keep them covered once they’re out of your hands!

Here’s a random but important college health tip, avoid walking to class in those cheap plastic flip flops. While they may keep your feet cool and look good with your summer wardrobe, few flip flops can provide the support needed for your feet—especially if they’re walking up and down concrete all day! If you are walking long distances, it's best to leave the sandals at home and avoid the arch pain and pinching associated with them. Instead choose a well fitted and supportive arched tennis shoe to insure your feet keep you walking to and from class safely and healthfully.

I bet you didn’t know that college students are in a high risk group for depression and a really high risk for suicide too. Make sure they know not to be afraid to ask for help if they need it. College stress is overwhelming at times, and many people feel embarrassed or ashamed to ask for help when their depression gets out of control. People should know that depression is a common and treatable problem that they don't have to deal with alone. Invite your college kids to tap into campus resources to find help or tell a friend how they’re feeling. Keeping in touch with family and friends can also help alleviate the stress and worry that leads to depression.
