Mothers get all the attention in regards to producing healthy babies. Historically, when things go right or wrong, mothers have been held responsible. But a study led by McGill researcher Sarah Kimmins suggests that the father's diet before conception may play an equally important role in the health of their offspring. The research focused on vitamin B9, also called folate, which is found in a range of green leafy vegetables, cereals, fruit and meats. We’ve all heard that pregnant women need to supplement with folate, but . now research from the Kimmins group shows that the father's folate levels at the time of conception may be just as important to the development and health of the child. Sorry guys, looks like you need to do your part too.

Have you ever suffered from depression? Well, new research shows that depression can actually age you from the inside out. That’s right, telomere’s, which are on the capes of your chromosome shorten as you age. New research shows that people’s telomeres shorten faster when they are depressed. In the research lead by Dr. Josin Verhoeven, they found that people with depression in their medical history were actually older, biologically speaking, than those who had never had depression.  So, even though things may seem hard to handle, know that staying positive may actually help you live longer.

Are we suffering a pandemic of diseases caused by our sedentary lifestyle? A new study published in the Lancet Journal of Medicine estimates that about a third of adults are not getting enough physical activity, causing 5.3 million deaths a year. That huge number equates to about 1 in 10 deaths from diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and breast and colon cancer. A solution? What if we changed the way we thought about exercise? How about we stop thinking of it as a luxury or a chore and instead realize that it is a vital part of living a healthy life. Pay more attention to how much exercise you get and whatever it is, do more.

Seasonal Affective Disorder, often called SAD is a real condition where normal people, just like you and me, start to feel down and somewhat depressed. It affects millions of people each year. It’s mostly due to the lack of sunlight. Light is known to increase serotonin levels which make us feel up-beat and happy. When the days are dark, rainy, or cloudy for long periods of time, this condition may start or worsen. Phototherapy is a great way to combat SAD, so talk to your doctor about your options. Also, be sure to supplement you Vitamin D in the fall and winter months. Some people refer to vitamin D as sunshine in a bottle.

Don’t you just love those cute little appetizers that are so popular around the holidays? I know I do. Unfortunately, they don’t all love you back. Many are packed with calories. It’s easy to feel like you haven’t had too much to eat because the bites are small, but the average bite size appetizer is 60 calories. Because we are so likely to try all of them, you can see how easy it is to rack up hundreds of calories real fast. And if you like those holiday drinks as well, you could leave that party with over a thousand calories packed in. Count your bits and limit your appetizers to four or five and skip the alcoholic drinks which are loaded with carbs. That way, you’ll still look fabulous come January.

New research presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) 2016 National Conference & Exhibition in San Francisco shows that the emergency rooms are seeing a big increase in the number of migraine headaches in their patient load. What’s strange about this - the headache increase is in the pediatric population. Interestingly enough, they have not studied the cause and are only offering the data of increased visits. Honestly, I am not surprised. Smart phones, lack of sleep, energy drinks, and even the stress of being a kid these days all play a role.

Georgia State University researchers found that emulsifiers, commonly found in processed foods lead to inflammation with in the gut and changes to the gut microbiome. Emulsifiers are used to make the ingredients mix and combine. This new finding may help us understand the enormous number of colon cancer cases each year. With nearly 150 thousand new cases of colon cancer each year, and with colon cancer is the third most common cancer of those that affect both men and women. We know that the gut biome is made up of over 100 trillion different microorganisms, all with an important job to do. This is just one more argument against eating packaged and processed foods. Eat fresh fruits and veggies, lean meats sparingly, and whole grains. Your guts will thank you.
