Prescription drug addiction is a major epidemic in our society now. Did you know that the most commonly abused prescription is opiates (like hydrocodone)? Well, prescribed opiods activate the same areas of your brain as heroin!!! That's VERY dangerous to get a habit of abusing---in fact, just abusing 1x can be fatal! Try to combat this addiction process by avoiding pain meds at the doctor, and ask what other options are available to you (like NSAIDS).

A new study out of Stanford suggest that with a FMRI scan we can take note of some of the same chemical reactions that are found in drug seekers---making it likely that if you posses those reactions at a young age, you will develop a drug addiction (or at least risky drug seeking behaviors). Further studies need to confirm the results, but can you imagine what the future holds if we can target a drug problem BEFORE it starts?

Do you suffer from Bipolar disorder? Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston may have made a discovery with huge implications on finding a cure. It turns out that a volume decrease in specific parts of the brain's hippocampus -- long identified as a hub of mood and memory processing – is linked to bipolar disorder. Using MRI the researchers were able to identify parts of the brain that have actually been damaged, causing the disorder. This is the first study to effectively locate the part of the brain that has been affected. When it comes to finding the answer to a problem, the first thing is to understand the problem completely. This research puts us on the right path for a future cure.

How you describe your symptoms to your doctor may be a key factor in getting a quick and accurate diagnosis. For example, were the pains sharp or dull, are you haven sudden mood swings or simply depressed? Nobody can describe symptoms better than the person who is having them. The adjectives you say will be what the doctor uses to determine the next steps such as what blood work to order or x-ray to take. You play a vital part in your health, so make sure you take the time to listen to your body, write down what you’re feeling and when you’re feeling it so that you give your doctor a clear picture of what’s going on. It may just save your life.

In the U.S. alone, more than 25 million people are known to have asthma. Research has increased our understanding of the agents that may be causing an increase in asthma case. Some of these causes may be found at work. Everything from cleaning chemicals to dust from industrial processes. According to Dr. Mazurek, a lead research epidemiologist at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, there’s over 350 known agents that are associated with developing asthma or causing work-related asthma. Work-related asthma includes both what’s called occupational asthma – where the disease is caused by factors at work – and work- exacerbated asthma, in which a person’s asthma is worsened by factors related to work. Both of which increase sick days.

We are all athletes. Whether you aspire to play sports in college or just like shooting hoops on weekends, or maybe gardening is your thing. If you don't think those dance classes involve athletic ability, consider how much better your balance and stamina is. In my mind, everyone is athletic in one way or another. That’s why it’s important to have regular physicals with your physician. Discuss any issues you may be having with joints or stiffness. Your goal should be to stay active as long as you can. When we lose flexibility and stamina, our health declines. And don’t forget to stretch each day when you wake up, mid-day, and before you go to bed. I bet if you tried, the athlete in you could stay strong well into your nineties.
