Fasting and juice cleanses are all the rage, but some research shows it’s not always a good option. This is Judy Gaman and this is your medical minute. Our bodies are designed to handle a varied diet. That’s what keeps our intestines, kidneys, and liver functioning properly. While intermittent fasting is ok for some people, it’s not always a good idea. People who are pregnant, have diabetes, liver or kidney issues should not fast. Even people who take prescription medications have to be very careful if they miss a meal. Fasting with medications can change the metabolism rate of the active ingredient and increase side effects. And if you’re fasting to shed pounds, hate to burst your bubble, but those pounds are most likely water and will come right back. You have the power to live a healthier future! Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Our website is loaded with valuable information on more than 100 different health topics. Been told you have irritable bowel syndrome or IBS? Find out what that really means. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. IBS is a diagnosis often given to patients who have diarrhea or constipation, or both. The problem is, it’s a descriptive diagnosis, meaning it’s just a nice way of describing your symptoms, not the cause. Many people who have had a diagnosis of IBS actually have food intolerances, perhaps to gluten or dairy. Very few IBS sufferers are told about the importance of balancing their gut biome with a good source of probiotics. The best thing an IBS sufferer can do is to get to the root cause. Because you can control your health and your future. The world is in trouble, and this time we are not talking about a medical crisis--we're talking about our tendency to be delusional, especially with our health and wellness. This episode we talk about self-awareness, what it is, what we can do to increase it, and what it means to our health and wellness.

Dr. Tasha Eurich earned her PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, which sounds very severe, bureaucratic, and bland. Her new book, Insight, is anything but. Making her case that “self-awareness is the meta-skill of the twenty-first century” and an effort to teach us how to form it, Eurich is insightful, penetrating, humane, and holistic in her approach:

It also shows that August is the WORST time to have anything done, because it produces the most complications. Who knows why these facts are true, but trust us they are!

Have you ever thought about taking 2 weeks to just sit on the couch and veg out? Well, studies show 1-2 days off to relax and rebuild your mental health is great for you, but any longer and you risk doing permanent damage to your heart and lungs.
