Men and women seem to approach better health differently. Let’s see if you fit the typical scenario. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. While everyone needs to go to the doctor and have their annual examination, what drives them to go is often different. For men, they tend to go if something is bothering them, usually related to energy or libido. They may either make the appointment or their wife may make it for them. Women almost always make their own appointments and are more likely to go for prevention purposes as well as for health issues. Is it time for your yearly exam? What will be your motivation? There's so much to know about living healthy... and that's why you can find all of our Medical Minutes and The Staying Young Radio Show at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. A person’s face says a lot about them. Do you know what your face says about you? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. University of Toronto found that people can identify with rather remarkable success if a person is wealthy or poor by looking at their face. Now the faces they looked at had no expression. Turns out the muscles on a face when at rest look differently based on life experiences. Because people don’t want to be judged, they suggest that you smile. Smiling is universal and lifts the muscle in to a place where people can’t tell anything about your socioeconomic class and instead see straight through to your heart. The Staying Young Show

Show Title: “Overcoming Grief and Living Again with Mary Mac”

Co-Hosts: Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman

Guest: Mary M. McCambridge “Mary Mac”

Today our show is about how to overcome grief. We are all about staying young and healthy, but when you lose a loved one it can take a toll on your health and in some cases the stress can age you dramatically. We have a special guest coming up, author and speaker Mary McCambridge also known as “Mary Mac” with some great tips for working through grief.

  • Talk about our own experiences with loss and grief.
  • Stories of patients and couples
  • What health risks come with loss of grief? Exhaustion, inability to think clearly, loneliness, substance abuse
  • One study found that the incidence of an acute heart attack increases 21-fold within 24 hours of the death of a loved one, before declining steadily with each subsequent day.
  • In another study, British researchers found that older people who are grieving are more likely to have weakened immune systems and develop infections.

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK

A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS. 1 in 4 children worldwide experience stunted growth at a young age due to poor nutrition. New research from Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, MO shows feeding one egg per day to children aged 6 to 9 months for 6 months could decrease the risk by 47%. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/317770.php

Did you know exercise decreases pain from arthritis? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. There are number of different things you can take for arthritis pain, but the one of the best ways to control arthritic pain is actually free. Did you know that low-impact to moderate levels of exercise can help?  It’s true and research has shown that water aerobics is a great way to achieve this, not only does it decrease pain, it increases mobility and range of motion. Even though your symptoms from arthritis may make you want to stay on the couch, it’s so important that you resist that urge and get moving instead.  IF you don’t have access to a pool, just go for walks and stretch each morning and evening.  You will be amazed at how much better you feel.  Of course exercise is always best when you have a buddy to do it with, so grab a friend and get going. The power of touch has even more benefits according to a new study.  This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Are you in Sync with your spouse or significant other? Maybe you just need to hold hands more often or snuggle at night. A new study from the University of Colorado at Boulder shows that when lovers touch, their bodies actually synch up. Heart rates tend to mimic each other and they are as one. Much like how music can affect our vital signs, so can touch. If your spouse is stressed or in pain, touching them lovingly may be just what the doctor ordered.   If you ask me, you don’t need a special occasion to hold hands, give a hug or snuggle, make every day a Find all of our Medical Minutes and The Staying Young Radio Show at STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Every 25 seconds an American will have a coronary event and every minute someone will die from that event.  The best way to avoid having a heart attack is to understand your risks and make changes as necessary.  Most people know that if you smoke, have diabetes, or high blood pressure, you are at an increased risk.  But – did you know that your waist size can be a risk factor too?  For men, a waist size of 40” or greater and for women 35” or greater can put you at significant risk.  If your waist has crept up to these numbers over the years, it’s time to take action.  Change your diet and get moving.  The things you eat and the amount of exercise you get directly affect your waist size, and ultimately your overall health.  During this medical minute – another person has died from a heart attack. Don’t be a statistic. You have the power to live a healthier future! Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Ever felt like you were going to pass out in the heat? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. The summer months are upon us and that means summer heat. Unfortunately, this is a time when many people land in the emergency room, or worst die from the heat. Knowing the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion will help you stay safe. Also, keep in mind, the heat can get you even if you’re in the shade. When we’re hot, we sweat. That sweat can lead to dehydration very quickly. The usual rule of thumb for water intake is to take the number of your weight, cut that number in half and drink that many ounces. So someone 200 lbs needs 100 ounces. Here’s the key – you need another 8 oz for every 30 minutes you are in the heat. If you feel dizzy, have a headache, feel shaky or confused, the heat could be to blame. Don’t push yourself, get out of the heat and get hydrated.
