Have you let your health deteriorate over the years? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. The Staying Young Show

Show Topic: Head Injuries – how serious are they? With Dr. Randall of Carrick Brain Centers

Co-Hosts: Dr. Gaman, Judy Gaman, Mark Anderson

Guests: Cagan Randall (in studio)

Segment 1

Discussion

Today we are talking about head injuries. The brain is so delicate and when we suffer a head injury or some sort of change in brain function, it can be difficult to get our lives back in order. This is going to be a fascinating show because we have Dr. Cagan Randall of Carrick Brain Centers with us later in the show and we are going to talk about some of the amazing research they have done and are doing. They do amazing work with both soldiers and civilians, so be prepared to be blown away with what you’re going to hear today.

  • (Connect) Talk about our own conks on the head and how those have affected us.
  • Docs – explain a little bit about how the knowledge of the brain and it’s overall function has changed even since you were in medical school
  • Some of the ways we obtain a head injury: freak accidents, car accidents, work related injuries, sports, and war
  • Other things that affect the brain, strokes, Parkinson’s, etc.
  • (Inspire) tell about my visit to Carrick Brain Centers

New research out of Penn State may hold some answers to childhood obesity. They used functional MRI to look at the brains of obese and non-obese children and it turns out that obese children have less of a response in the reward center part of the brain when presented with healthy food. Meaning that when they eat healthy food, their belly may be full but the brain is not satisfied. There is more research needed to see whether the decreased brain function caused the obesity or if the obesity caused the lower response in the brain, but it’s a start. Perhaps if we can find out more, we can help retrain parts of the brain.

Parents, it’s time to talk to your teens about energy drinks. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. European researchers have been evaluating the claims of energy drinks being a health hazard and what they found might surprise you. Next time you feel the need for quick energy from a can or small bottle, you might want to think again. The large amounts of caffeine can actually shock the body and cause caffeine intoxication, as sometimes fatal condition. Even if you don’t drink enough to die, these drinks have been associated with high blood pressure, vomiting, and heart palpitations. The study also showed that young people who drink energy drinks are more likely to engage in risky behavior. So, make healthier choices and forgo the quick fix that may cause more harm than good. Are you an asparagus fan? If not you should be. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. A member of the lilly family, this vegetable is filled with fiber and protein. Believe it or not, the stalks contain nutrients that protect you against cancer and heart disease. And – it’s great for protecting the skin and body against aging because asparagus contains glutathione. Want to absorb more nutrients when you eat? Have a side of asparagus with your meal. The inulin, which is a special type of carbohydrate found in this vegetable can actually make your body uptake more nutrients in the large intestine. Next time your loved one says they don’t like asparagus, you can give them all the reasons they need to eat it. Exercise is important to overall health, but do you need some tips on how to stick to a plan? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Exercise always sounds good, but keeping a date with yourself to actually do it can be a problem. Research shows that teaming up for a challenge with a reward system actually has a high success rate. So basically, bet your co-worker $50 that you can keep your workout schedule. If you just need to challenge yourself, keep a jar and deposit $10 for every workout. Then at the end of 90 days, spend that money on something fun. It doesn’t matter where your motivation comes from, just get it done. Exercise is vital to good health, not only is it important for weight loss, it helps ward off depression and can improve your brain power. Exercise is also a great way to counteract the pain of arthritis. For more unique and useful health information on more than 100 different topics, visit STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM where you can also find my book, Aged to Perfection, How to Thrive to 100, Happy Healthy & Wise. Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that causes the individual's immune system to mistakenly attacks myelin - the waxy coating on nerves. Without myelin nerves can’t transmit messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Research out of the Mayo Clinic has found that Prevotella histicola, a type of probiotic or gut bacteria, suppresses MS in the mice. In the study, it also increased certain cell types that fight disease, including dendritic cells and T cells. I am excited about this because it could mean the cure too many inflammatory immune diseases could be found by curing the gut first.

Ever wonder how we all survived drinking from the water hose? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. You may have heard that drinking from the water hose is bad for you. When I first heard this I thought “Well I did it as a kid and I’m fine” Turns out that our old rubber water hoses were much safer than the hoses they make today. Newer hoses have plastics and chemicals that keep them from melting or deteriorating. This is great for hose longevity, but maybe not for your longevity. If you do decide to drink from the hose, be sure to let all the stagnant water, which is usually warm and filled with toxins, leave the hose first. Same goes for watering your garden. Keep in mind, they still make the safe old-fashioned rubber hoses and you can purchase them at most hardware places or online. We’ve all heard it, we need to stay out of the sun. But, did you know that some sun is necessary for a happy, healthier you? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. The sun has gotten a bad rap because prolonged exposure can lead to skin cancer. Isn’t it ironic that hospitals and labs are using UV light to kill bacteria, even the most danger types of bacteria? Hmm, maybe a little sun would do our immune system some good, after all, the sun has been known to boost our levels of white blood cells. The sun has also been shown to reduce stress and reduce body inflammation. So, how much is enough sun? As a rule, twenty to thirty minutes of sunshine is sufficient to get the health benefits without creating the dangers that come with over exposure. Remember, if your skin starts to turn pink, it’s time to head back inside or apply sunscreen. Get started today by visiting STAY YOUNG AMERICA DOT COM. Co-Hosts: Dr. Gaman, Judy Gaman, Mark Anderson

Guest: Mark Berzins, the author of MOST GUYS ARE LOSERS (And How To Find a Winner): Dating Wit & Wisdom From Your Dad.

Segment 1

This is going to be such a fun show and one that most of you can totally relate to. We are talking about the importance of dating and marrying the right person. Being in a healthy relationship is a great way to positively improve your health. On the contrary, being in a bad relationship can destroy your health.

  • (Connect) How grateful we are to be in a positive relationship and what makes it so great
  • Docs – explain ways that spouses can harm one another (negative talk, bad habits rubbing off (like eating, sedentary lifestyle), stress
  • Why we need to talk to our children and grandchildren about how to attract and keep the right kind of partner
  • (Inspire) If you are in a less than healthy relationship – ways to improve it.

Doc Shock of the day

Not shocking at all, but still a great study. This was out of my alma mater, George Washington University. The found that a correlation between borderline testosterone levels in men and depression. In the study, there was a 56% correlation. The recommendation is that that men who present with borderline testosterone levels should be screened for depression and obesity. I believe the same is true of the opposite – if men present with obesity and depression, they need to be screened for testosterone deficiency. Ironically, a high percentage of the study subjects were also taking anti-depressants. Did they need them? Or did they simply need bio-identical hormone replacement therapy?

It appears that this molecule then starts to block the regeneration of brain cells. The great thing about this research is that if they can develop antibodies to this protein, we may be able to preserve the brain better as we age.

Discuss

  • Why you wrote this book – sounds like something a girl would write
  • The Abuser: he may be charming, handsome, and appear loving and normal. But there is something wrong in his wiring that causes him to switch personalities.

Bottom Line: If he hurts you, break it off. No second chances. No apologies accepted.

  • The Cheater shows his colors early and often in a relationship. He can’t keep himself from straying and is weak-willed. If your man says, “I couldn’t help myself,” Berzins counters “that’s a load of crap.”

Bottom Line: Cheating should always be deemed a permanent character flaw. Once a cheater, always a cheater.

  • Jealous & Possessive Guy: A red flag is the perpetual ‘I love you’ You can’t ever leave his sight without constant reassurance that you love him. His underlying fear is that you will leave him.

Bottom Line: The jealous guy can be dangerous, so firmly explain to him that you no longer love him. If he continues to pursue you, get a restraining order

  • The Selfish Guy: Many selfish guys end up being career singles. It is the reason they never settle down. You will always be #2 in his life to going out with these guys, going to the gym, the ballgame. This guy is always doing something and will call you selfish if you ask him to spend time with you.

Bottom Line: Do you really want to have a boyfriend who makes you feel like going out with you is causing him to make a sacrifice? That’s garbage. Selfishness is just another form of addiction that can be overcome with discipline and self-control.

  • OPEN DISCUSSION ABOUT THE FEMALE VERSIONS OF THESE (and more)

A good man is hard to find.

Good things come to those who wait.

Breaking up is hard to do.

You should love your boyfriend unconditionally.
