Guest: None

THAT MUSIC MEANS IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

Neuroscientists at Duke University have found that a single type of neuron deep within the brain is the 'master controller' of habits. The research shows that if you form new habits, you boost the activity of this cell, known as the fast-spiking interneuron. However, shutting down it down may help break all those bad habits. While the study has only been completed in mice, it serves as a light of hope for those with addiction or obsessive compulsive disorder.

IMMORTAL MINUTE

This whole hour we are talking about aging gracefully. When we wrote the book Age to Perfection: How to Thrive, Happy, Healthy and Wise, we interviewed people over 100 so that we could see if the scientific articles and the human experience matched up. For the most part, it did. We know how to live good, healthy, long lives, but often don’t follow it. Today, we’re breaking it down into easy steps you can start following today.

  • Hormones play a significant role in aging gracefully. Why do people shy away? How some past research got it wrong.
  • Hormones are not just for better sex. You need optimized hormones for strength and disease prevention.
  • What are the outside signs and symptoms of someone who is aging prematurely and needs hormone optimization?
  • Exercise – why people tend to blow off exercise as they age
  • Exercise is a natural anti-depressant
  • How much – how often

Do you know the symptoms of a thyroid disorder? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. The thyroid is a gland in the neck, close to your Adams apple. It’s shaped like a butterfly, and although it’s small, it’s very important. Many people lose weight or gain weight, suffer from a rapid heart beat, are moody or fatigued and don’t know why. If you suffer from these or other odd or sudden symptoms, ask your doctor to check your thyroid. Not only should it be physically examined, there are basic labs like TSH, T3 and T4 that can show if the thyroid is functioning properly. The thyroid produces hormones and just like other hormones in the body, they transmit signals to the body on how to behave and how to regulate. If you feel as though somethings not right – schedule an appointment with your doctor today. The Staying Young Show

Show Topic: Avoiding Toxic Relationships with special guest Mark Berzins

Co-Hosts: Dr. Gaman, Judy Gaman, Mark Anderson

Guest: Mark Berzins, the author of MOST GUYS ARE LOSERS (And How To Find a Winner): Dating Wit & Wisdom From Your Dad.

Segment 1

Intro – 30 sec.

This is going to be such a fun show and one that most of you can totally relate to. We are talking about the importance of dating and marrying the right person. Being in a healthy relationship is a great way to positively improve your health. On the contrary, being in a bad relationship can destroy your health.

  • (Connect) How grateful we are to be in a positive relationship and what makes it so great
  • Docs – explain ways that spouses can harm one another (negative talk, bad habits rubbing off (like eating, sedentary lifestyle), stress
  • Why we need to talk to our children and grandchildren about how to attract and keep the right kind of partner
  • (Inspire) If you are in a less than healthy relationship – ways to improve it.

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM)

Doc Shock of the day 2 min

Not shocking at all, but still a great study. This was out of my alma mater, George Washington University. The found that a correlation between borderline testosterone levels in men and depression. In the study, there was a 56% correlation. The recommendation is that that men who present with borderline testosterone levels should be screened for depression and obesity. I believe the same is true of the opposite – if men present with obesity and depression, they need to be screened for testosterone deficiency. Ironically, a high percentage of the study subjects were also taking anti-depressants. Did they need them? Or did they simply need bio-identical hormone replacement therapy?

Immortal minute – Research out of the University of California discovered a new molecule beta-2 microglobulin, or B2M, which is part of MHC I, which plays a major role in the adaptive immune system actually increases as we age. It appears that this molecule then starts to block the regeneration of brain cells. The great thing about this research is that if they can develop antibodies to this protein, we may be able to preserve the brain better as we age.

Welcome

Mark Berzins, the author of MOST GUYS ARE LOSERS (And How To Find a Winner): Dating Wit & Wisdom From Your Dad.

Discuss

  • Why you wrote this book – sounds like something a girl would write
  • The Abuser: he may be charming, handsome, and appear loving and normal. But there is something wrong in his wiring that causes him to switch personalities.

Bottom Line: If he hurts you, break it off. No second chances. No apologies accepted.

  • The Cheater shows his colors early and often in a relationship. He can’t keep himself from straying and is weak-willed. If your man says, “I couldn’t help myself,” Berzins counters “that’s a load of crap.”

Bottom Line: Cheating should always be deemed a permanent character flaw. Once a cheater, always a cheater.

  • Jealous & Possessive Guy: A red flag is the perpetual ‘I love you’ You can’t ever leave his sight without constant reassurance that you love him. His underlying fear is that you will leave him.

Bottom Line: The jealous guy can be dangerous, so firmly explain to him that you no longer love him. If he continues to pursue you, get a restraining order

  • The Selfish Guy: Many selfish guys end up being career singles. It is the reason they never settle down. You will always be #2 in his life to going out with these guys, going to the gym, the ballgame. This guy is always doing something and will call you selfish if you ask him to spend time with you.

Bottom Line: Do you really want to have a boyfriend who makes you feel like going out with you is causing him to make a sacrifice? That’s garbage. Selfishness is just another form of addiction that can be overcome with discipline and self-control.

  • OPEN DISCUSSION ABOUT THE FEMALE VERSIONS OF THESE (and more)

Tease 20 sec. - SHOUT OUT TO MILITARY, Facebook (stay young media group) , download podcasts – coming up - let’s see how good you are that the relationship test as we do a true and false test. Stay tuned!

The type of sunglasses you wear makes a difference. This is Judy Gaman and this is your medical minute. Sunglasses may make you look cool, but if you have the right kind, they will also protect your eyes from damage from the sun and keep the skin around your eyes from wrinkling. Yes, it’s true, our eyes age too and often too soon. When you buy your shades, be sure to look at the label or check for a sticker on the front of the lens. You want to purchase a pair that says it blocks 100% of the UV rays, anything less is not sufficient. Cheap sunglasses will actually cost you more in the long run because they don’t protect your retina. Even if it’s cloudy, be sure to wear your sunglasses, the glare that makes you squint is the same glare that ages your eyes. You have the power to live a healthier future! Want to know the two things that age you the fastest? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Nobody wants to age, especially when the years are evident on your face. Too much money is spent on anti-aging creams, when the basics of good nutrition, exercise, and a healthy diet are missed. There are also two things that age you faster than anything else. The first on is smoking. You don’t even have to be the one inhaling, just living with a smoker can add years to your face. Vaping is not much better, so skip the tobacco and nicotine altogether. The second one is missing sleep. Getting at least 7 and a half hours of sleep per night will help ward off the signs of aging, while less will leave you with dark circles, dull eyes, and an overall look of unhealthiness. Need a better night’s rest? Try keeping the room cool and dark and follow a strict routine. Are you exercising too much? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Exercise is a vital part of staying healthy and living a long life. We need exercise to properly digest our food, have mental clarity, and balance our hormones, but too much of a good thing – is a bad thing. Be sure that your exercise routine includes at least one day of rest per week. The body needs time to repair and recuperate. If you overdo it, by exercising too much or for too many days in a row, you’re risk of injury, illness, and irritability go up. I suggest that you also rotate your exercise and incorporate gentle yoga or something similar on one day, and then be sure you have one day of complete rest and relaxation. Because you can control your health and your future. The Staying Young Show

Show Title: “Why am I so Tired?”

Co-Hosts: Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson

Guest: None

Segment 1

So many people are walking around saying “I’m so tired” If you’re one of them, this show is for you. We’re going to go step by step through the most common causes of fatigue. Some of them may surprise you.

  • Discussion: Fatigue and lack of sleep. Even if you’re getting the required 7.5 hours a night, they have to be quality hours. Sleep apnea, Nocturia, and other things disrupt sleep.

THAT MUSIC MEANS IT’S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE’RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

There is new research on the Zika virus from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. This research may shock you because we all think of Zika as the virus that eats away at the brain of a fetus if a mother becomes infected. Turns out that Zika also likes to feed on brain cancer and maybe someday used to treat glioblastoma, aggressive form of brain cancer that claims nearly 12,000 lives a year.
