If you have ever been around a preemie, you know how fragile they are. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. The special intravenous nutrition is what helps preemies thrive outside the womb. The University of Montreal made a great discovery which may save the lives of hundreds if not thousands of preemies. They studied babies between 26-31 weeks being fed intravenously with a highly nutritious substance. As it turns out, if this IV food mixture is exposed to light, it can actually produce oxidants that the baby is unable to fight off due to its premature immune system. Keeping the IV nutrition from light, gives the baby more of a chance of survival. The study showed as much as a 50% reduction in mortality– Sometimes the simplest things can make the biggest differences. This information is new, so if you know someone with a preemie, you may want to share this study with them. New study out of the Georgia Institute of Technology shows that people who day dream do so because they are really smart! Apparently, they have such brain capacity that when something is simple or boring, they tend to think of other creative ideas. Those with frequent daydreaming scored higher on intellectual and creative ability. Don’t believe it? Well there’s proof because those same people had more efficient brain systems measured by way of MRI.

Take a look in your pantry today. How much packaged and processed food are you buying each time you go to the store? Better yet, how much are you consuming on a daily basis? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. New research from the American Journal of Preventative Medicine shows that purchases of prepackaged and process foods is up, while the nutrition content is down. This means our country is becoming the fat and malnourished at the same time. Next time you are at the store, try to avoid the boxed items and find fun ways to make fruits and veggies part of your diet. If you’re a big dipper and you just can’t avoid adding a little something to your veggies, forgo the dressings and opt for something a little healthier, like hummus. You can retrain your pallet. Make it a priority to get your health back on track. For useful health information visit Stay Young America.com where you can find my book Stay Young 10 Proven Steps to Ultimate Health. New research shows that as much as 35% Americans have a vitamin E deficiency. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Vitamin E is found naturally in vegetable and wheat germ oils, cereals, chicken, beef, eggs, fruits, and vegetables. You can also take Vitamin E as a supplement. This vitamin plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy weight, preventing cancer, and dementia. Most people don’t realize that Vitamin E dissolves in fat. Could it be that the low fat and fat free diets are robbing our bodies of the Vitamin E it needs? A new study out of Ohio State University found that taking Vitamin E with a glass of milk or a square of cream cheese can increase the absorption rate by as much as 3 times. Even if you are young, vitamin E plays a vital role in the prevention of metabolic syndrome, a precursor to diabetes. So make vitamin E a part of your morning routine and be sure to take it with a glass of milk – consider the two the dynamic duo. So much talk about calcium supplements. Do they help do they help build strong bones or are they a waste of time. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Several conflicting studies about calcium supplements have surfaced. Interestingly enough, the research that came out in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) stated that calcium supplements should not be recommended as part of a fracture prevention regimen. However, the International Osteoporosis Foundation has stated that low calcium is a problem, but they also take it a step further and mention vitamin D deficiencies. Vitamin D is necessary for the absorption of calcium. This is why you see milk and other dairy products with added vitamin D. So, if you ask me, calcium supplements alone may not solve the problem, but if you couple calcium with vitamin D supplements, not only are you going to feel better, your bones will be stronger. Stronger bones mean less chance of a fall or injury from a fall. For more unique tips on staying young and staying healthy visit Stay Young America.com that’s Stay Young America.com

Is your child a little on the chunky side? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Today I want to talk to the parents out there. What if I told you that something you are doing or not doing is giving your child a death sentence? Now that I have your attention, take a look at your kids. Are they overweight? If they are, new research shows that they are at risk for early heart disease and diabetes. Nothing could break your heart more than seeing your child suffer as a young adult, or die and early death. The good news is that you can do something about it. As a parent you have an incredible amount of control over the food your children eat and the amount of activity they get. Basically, if it’s not in the house, they won’t eat it. And as a parent, it’s your job to avoid those drive thrus. It’s also your job to set limits. Limit the amount of TV and electronics and delegate chores that keep your kids moving. You owe it to your kids to give them the best start in life. Looking for a healthy snack that is sweet and may help you live longer? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute Dried plums are a great go too. They are conveniently packaged and don’t need refrigeration. While dried plums are a sweet treat, surprisingly enough they have a low glycemic index, meaning they won’t spike your body’s sugar levels. Packed with antioxidants, they also help your body fight against free radicals. The fiber, magnesium, and potassium content of dried plums is significant, helping promote good health and a healthy weight. One study out of Texas A&M University and the University of North Carolina proves that dried plums have yet another added benefit, they help improve the gut microbiome. The microbiome does everything from prevent cancer and metabolic syndrome, to improve the immune system. It can be incredibly powerful to put kids in charge of their own health. Give them the reigns at dinner, let them have the power to create healthy food for themselves. Have children make a potato fixin’s bar by choosing their own toppings for half a baked potato. Arrange separate bowls and serving utensils for refried beans, black-eyed peas, chopped chicken tenders, shredded low-fat cheese, sliced cherry tomatoes, thinly chopped spinach, and grated carrots for children to build their own baked potato. It so important to cook together too. Allow children to learn about foods by letting them help prepare them. By teaching your kids the value of cooking at home and family meal time is something that will also bless your children’s children. We want to empower you with as much health information as possible.
