This is Judy Gaman, author of the award winning book Age to Perfection: How to Thrive to 100, Happy, Healthy, and Wise and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Each day I bring you one new tip that will help you stay young and vibrant. It's the worst when something you really wanted to eat falls on the floor. But if you grab it in five seconds, it's ok, right? The five-second-rule isn't a real thing. Bacteria can contaminate a food within milliseconds. Mythbusting tests show that moist foods attract more bacteria than dry foods, but there's no "safe duration." Instead, safety depends on how clean the surface you dropped the food on is. Whether you eat it or not after that is up to you, but if the people that walk on that floor are also walking around New York City, for example, we wouldn't recommend it. We want to empower you with as much health information as possible. Well, for one month, scientists fed dozens of people candy bars containing 10 times the usual amount of chocolate, and dozens of others fake chocolate bars. When they counted the zits before and after each diet, there was "no difference" between the two groups. Neither the chocolate nor the fat seemed to have any effect on acne. A new study, led by Danish-based researchers found that hydrochlorothiazide, known to most as HCTZ, actually increases the risk for skin cancer. HCTZ is one of the most commonly prescribed antihypertensive drugs around the world. Turns out, the drug makes the skin more sensitive to the damage of ultraviolet (UV) rays causing an increased risk for skin cancer, specifically an 11% increased risk for skin cancer on the lips.

Today’s tip is all about learning to listen to your body. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. We tend to get so busy these days that we forget to slow down and hear what our body is saying. Did you know that most people tend to eat when they’re really just thirsty. This causes a flood of unnecessary calories. Another common thing people ignore is when the body tells you it’s tired. That’s not the time to get on social media or glue yourself to the tube. Nope – this is when you sleep. Ignoring your body and the things it’s trying to tell you will only lead to bigger issues later on. If you’re too busy to listen to your body, I guess you have time for a major illness, because ignoring symptoms never pays off. Listen to your body and improve your chances for a longer and healthier life. Tips like this and full episodes of the Staying Young Show can be found at StayYoungAmerica.com that’s StayYoungAmerica.com

MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM)
If you are taking a PPI – Proton Pump Inhibitor, the medications used to treat ulcers and acid reflux, you need to hear this. Two new studies have emerged that show PPI class drugs can actually cause damage to the kidneys. These drugs were never intended to be used on a long term basis, but many people have been on them for years, causing irreversible damage to their kidneys.
A study out of Johns Hopkins University followed over 10K adults with normal kidney function from 1996 to 2011. They found that PPI users were between 20% and 50% more likely to develop CKD than non-PPI users, even after accounting for baseline differences. This discovery was replicated in a second study with over 240,000 patients who were followed from 1997 to 2014. This is significant!

When’s the last time you had a date. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Today’s tip is all about the incredible benefits of dates. I’m not talking about the Friday night kind of date. No – let’s talk about that small, sweet fruit that often gets overlooked. Packed with nutrients, dates contain oil, calcium, sulfur, iron, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, copper and magnesium. Some experts say that a date at breakfast will keep constipation at bay and help prevent colon cancer. Because they’re naturally sweet, dates are a great pick-me-up in the afternoon, giving you a much needed energy boost for the end of the work day. And if you suffer from seasonal allergies, the trace minerals in Dates may give you some relief. Want a little pecan pie? Stuff a date with a pecan for a tasty treat.
